When do you get utilities turned on when buying a home?
When should we have the oil, electric, water, cable (am I missing anything?) switched over? We are closing very soon and I was wondering when should we have utilities turned on so that we aren't left freezing or without electricity as soon as we move in. Thanks.

ask your realtor to check with the homeowners and see when they'll be shutting everything off. that day they have everything scheduled you should have everything scheduled on your end to be turned on.

Re: When do you get utilities turned on when buying a home?
We received a letter from our lawyer. We called LIPA, Suffolk Water Authority, etc and they're taking a final meter reading on Monday before we close and then they will bill the owner up to that point, and then we'll be billed for the rest.
FM me if you have any ??'s - I'm going thru this as we speak.

Re: When do you get utilities turned on when buying a home?
We called about a week before closing and informed each utility when the closing was and that we wanted things switched over. Everything went extremely smooth.

They left everything running for us. We called alll of the utility companies and they changed the billing over as of our closing date.

We did everything on the day we closed... we left our closing and called everyone while we were out to lunch waiting to go to our closing on our co-op.

Thanks everyone. I already scheduled Cablevision to come in the first week we move in. Now, I have to figure out who we should go with to get oil.

Re: When do you get utilities turned on when buying a home?
We called everyone before hand & told them the dat that we were moving in. The cable & utilities co's then got in touch with the current home owners & confirmed that they were indeed moving & they date they were no longer using the services at the house. We only had to wait 2 days for Cablevision that way.

Re: When do you get utilities turned on when buying a home?
I planned on having mine switched on the day of my closing since we were moving in the next day. But when I called I was told that the seller hadn't requested they be turned off for three days after I moved so it ended up just switching right over to us.
And techically, we got three days of electric and gas for free. DH wanted to reimburse the owner for those three days. Um...(1) how the heck do you determine how much the electric/gas you used is worth and (2) we just gave the guy hundreds of thousands of dollars. He can give us three days of utilities!
DH is so silly sometimes...

Re: When do you get utilities turned on when buying a home?
We called the utilities on Thusday and Friday and they came Monday morning before closing to get one last reading on everything and then transferred the house accounts to us. They knew how to do everything - you just have to say you're moving.
As for cable, phone, etc - if you're using cablevision - just call them and they'll set up an appt to transferyour package to your new home.
FM me with any questions. We closed yesterday (mon) and we have everything working.

Congrats on your closing!! Thanks for all the tips. We have to do 2 walk throughs so I will schedule the utilities to come and see the readings then. Thanks again!
