when do you start looking for daycare?
when should you start making plans or reservations if you plan on going back to work after a few months of maternity (FMLA) leave?

Re: when do you start looking for daycare?
I started looking in the summer. I am due at the end of January but I am not putting the baby into daycare until Sept because I have the summer off (I am a teacher) At that point the one I chose only had one crib left for sept of '08. I would start looking now.

Re: when do you start looking for daycare?
Earlier the better. Some of the daycares have very long waiting lists. We put ourselves on the wait list for a daycare when I was 12 weeks preggo.

Re: when do you start looking for daycare?
oh boy! How did you guys even start searching for reputable places? It makes me so nervous to leave my little one some place especially when they are so young...

Re: when do you start looking for daycare?
Thanks f or the replies - I will start looking right away.
I'm actually looking for part time day care (once or twice a week) I have a feeling I'm never going to find it. We are going to be asking both sets of grandparents, but I really wanted to have them in day care as well.

Re: when do you start looking for daycare?
Unforrtunately, the sooner the better. I was lucky to find a sitter when I was 6 month pregnant - sometimes the centers have a waiting list a year long.

Re: when do you start looking for daycare?
Just a few thoughts:
IMO, a daycare center is better than a nanny staying at home or a small family daycare for the following reasons:
*Daycare centers are anal about following all the NYS laws
*There are supervisors watching all the time
*Your babies learn to be a lot more independent, plus they are always learning new skills from the older babies in the room
* If you have a problem, there are people above the teacher to speak with, and things are usually handled well...

Each has pros/cons just depends on what you want. We have the best of both worlds-DD goes to a small Family Daycare-the sitter is anal about NYS laws as she has no violations and hasnt for many years and intends to keep it that way i.e if they come with a scratch etc she documents it. She has a curriculum specific to each child-right now she has 4-my DD an infant and two toddlers plus my oldest DD who is 7. So we get the benefits of a center minus the increased germs.

There's a thread on this I'll try to find and bump. If you look at a place, please add it!
