I guess it depends on your Dr and your threshhold. I got one last week when I was in L&D. I think you begin getting them at 36 weeks (wll my Dr does anyway), and they feel how low and open your cervix is. The Dr that did mine, pushed onto my uterus at the same time to "feel" what was going on. It was not the worst thing ever, but I definitely felt it.

I dont remember it being painful.. but the ones I had in the hospital to check my cervix when I was having contractions a month early with last pregnancy.. those did hurt.. b/c the lady kept pushing in really far to reach it to do the measuring with her finger.

I had my 1st at 39 weeks, it didn't hurt at all. Maybe it also depends in the dr.

With my first, the internal was uncomfortable, but only because I wasn't dilated and the baby was very high up.

I got my first one at 36 weeks and it wasn't painful at all. I think it depends on the person/situation.

Not all Drs check before you are 40 weeks....... My midwife checked my cervix a week ago due to a lot of contactions and it didn't hurt at all.... I think it depends on who is doing it and your specific body

My OB didn't do them unless you made it to 40 weeks, which I did not.

I had my first at 36 weeks and 3 more since. They are not painful. One time it was a bit uncomfortable but not bad.

Re: When is the 1st internal and why do people say its painful/uncomfortable?
I had my first one at 36 weeks and one each week after that. They weren't that bad. The internals at the hospital (before the epidural) were very uncomfortable for me though.
