when it comes to buying a home
I feel poor. I don't want to start any debates about living on LI. I really do want to live here, but I sometimes get depressed that I can barely afford a shack here and for the same amount of $$ elsewhere I could buy a beautiful 4 bedroom 2200 sq. ft home.

You cant compare is what the problem is. The size of a house does NOT make it a home.
Our home is a tiny ranch 1000 sq ft, one bathroom and its adorable I love it. Nothing is permanent. No one says you ahve to die in the house. You start small then go bigger
dont compare to what other states have, how big people houses who bought years ago are

Re: when it comes to buying a home
I know, you are both totally right. I think part of the problem is my DH - he is from upstate NY and that is one of those "places." I know what it is like here, and he does too, but I think compares what we can get here to his the house his brother bought for $125,000 there, and then he gets me upset. But then I ask him - do you want to live there and he's like "no." So we are stuck between a rock and a hard place, because we are going to live here, and he can't get that out of his mind.

COMPLETELY AGREE!!
You can't torture yourself by comparing...if what you want is here and you know what you can afford, happily walk toward that. It may be a small house, but it'll be YOUR house...in the location of your choosing. Leaving isn't a viable option for everyone...and it sounds like it isn't for you. So try to be happy for you and your husband and the home that you'll have.
It's not the size, it's the heart.
Don't compare...that will make it worse!
Happy house hunting!

Re: when it comes to buying a home
that's a hard situation. I always believe that you should live where you want to live. The size of the house doesn't make it a home. It's only a home when filled with people, family, friends and love.
My house is modest. Would I like a big beautiful brand new or renovated house...sure..but the reality is, I'm here for now and we have the best house for us now.
It will not be the only house I ever own. But I have built up equity and I will be able to parlay that into an uprade down the road hopefully.
You have to start somewhere. I don't know where I read this but most people stay in their first house 5-7 years.
