when purchasing flights online...it never asks about baby
Does the airline just find out when we show up at the airport?

If you purchase your tix online there should be a box where you can click that you are brining an infant, to sit on your lap.
I just purchased tix last week through USAIR, and I chose that option - I didn't have to pay any additional charges.

with Jetblue you have call and let them know so that they do not want to sit infants in the same row...

Re: when purchasing flights online...it never asks about baby
I booked mine on line and there was no place to tell them I was traveling with an infant. I had to call about something and I mentioned it then. She said "well it's a good thing you told me, we have to know in advance". Now, how was I supposed to know that

I think it's best to call the airline. We just flew with DD and didn't buy her a ticket, but they had to list her on the flight.

I thought you had to pay for an infant to fly now? Or is that law going into effect later on this year?

It asks children and their age.
Infants 2 and younger are free, two and up you have to buy a ticket.

Another reason to let them know ahead of time is so that you get a seat assignment in a row that has an extra drop down oxygen mask. I believe on Delta all the even # rows are ok to sit with a lap child. The first time I flew I did not know this and they had to change my seat assignment when I checked in at the airport.
