When remodeling a room.....
Where do you usually begin?
For example, I am remodeling my bathroom. Gutting the entire thing and starting from scratch. I dont know what to pick out first. Wall color and base everything else off of that? Vanity? Shower curtain?
Also - I was looking around on the HGTV website and Better Home and Gardens and there designs have motly white vanities, I guess that is what is in style now? My bathroom is so small. Is it better to go with brighter colors?

Re: When remodeling a room.....
We gutted and renovated 2 bathrooms. For me, I found the tile I liked first and then worked off that. As for the color, go with what you like. Don't worry about the size. You can go with dark wood and brighten it up with light wall color. Good luck!

DH is trying to talk me out of tile because of the inevitable mildew. But I like the way tile looks. The only other options I see besides tile are the plastic (?) tubs that come up the wall.
Thoughts on tile?
(This is my 1st house so I am just starting to "sew my oats" and learn everything, so I hope I don't come across and stupid)

You don't sound stupid at all! This is our first home too and we are clueless about so many things. We did both the bathrooms at the same time and it was a nightmare but I love the tile and I love the way they turned out. I would think those plastic things are the only other thing you could get in the shower area but I wonder if they would get mildew as well. We make sure we dry down the tiles after we take a shower and we haven't had a problem with mildew so far.

Re: When remodeling a room.....
Lighter colors will help open up the space.
I have had tiles in bathrooms my entire life and have never had an issues with any of them. If it's installed correctly and you take care of them it shouldn't be an issue for you either.
Inspiration can be found anywhere - a vanity, a color, a shower curtain - just like you mentioned. I would find one piece that you absolutely LOVE no matter what it is, and work everything else around it.

Re: When remodeling a room.....
start with tile then your sink and toilet color should work with the tile, then paint color then fixtures last.
and the plastic liners get a ton of mildew in all the seams, IMO worse then tile! I've never heard of tile having more mildew Also- shower curtain are the worst with mildew, so if mildew is a concern, do glass doors.

i agree! we just gutted our master bath and picked tiles first- then vanity, fixtures and cabinetry. last was paint and we went with a bold blue- BM newbury port blue and it came out awesome! we brightened it with white moldings and it had cathedral ceilings anyway. good luck!

Re: When remodeling a room.....
I agree that you can find inspiration anywhere. We're doing a mini re-do of our down stairs bathroom around the new tub we put in.

Tile is always better than the vinyl tub surrounds IMO

Me too - I think the vinyl tub surrounds just look gross, even though I'm sure they aren't.
We had tile and glass shower doors in our old apartment. We would squeegee the tiles and door after every shower and mildew was not a problem.
In our house, I have a shower curtain, and I get a fabric liner and I can say that I don't need to wash it for months before I see mildew start on it. I usually get a new fabric liner once a year if that.

Re: When remodeling a room.....
we have a 35 year old surround on our bathtub and honestly I would never put it in a main bathroom. The only way i would do surrounds is if its a tenant because if they destroy it its easily replaced.
If mildew is a problem then look into making sure you have proper ventilation in the bathroom. Make sure you install a high power vent in your shower area. As everyone said go for tile selection first - what type of feel do you want, what type of budget do you have? Spend the money on the tiles, then vanity then everything else. Tiles you want to last as long as possible so go with something that will never go out of style unless you plan on leaving your house or redoing your bathroom in the next 15 years. Go to the tile store and take samples home. Have fun!!!

I usually find a piece I like and build around it. for example: I went to various showrooms and then online and found a double vanity for the bathroom and I am building on that.
