When researching schools for possible employment...

What do you always make sure you look at?

I have my resume out there on open market (and on LI).

I have my first interview next week. Now other than the "vibe" I get...when transferring to a new job what would you consider other than traveling on whether or not to accept a position?

I'm looking at the report card and surveys and it all seems like a lovely place...but looks can be deceiving and I would hate to leave my school now (which I am not really happy with) to get into a worse situation.

That is a tough one. What do you not like about your current school? Is it the behavior of the kids or the adminitration or both?

I think you can get the best vibe of the school by looking at the teachers in the school. If you could somehow talk to a teacher that teaches there, it would give you a better picture of things.

It's a combination of a few things. Being a newer school I feel as if the rules aren't really set. Since I started in March, I have been asking for help and I haven't gotten any. The "business manager" thinks she is an administrator and is completely rude and disrespectful to me. It is the overall environment.

The principal is wonderful and I really like her...but there are more things I don't like then I do like. It's rough...I know the city isn't going to be easy but I am stressed all day every day.

Re: When researching schools for possible employment...

I am currently looking on open market. I have a demo lesson next week.

I've been at my school for 7 years and I've had enough with the commute, being constantly under the threat of being shut down etc.

I am specifically looking in Queens because I want to drive in. I do not want to take the LIRR anymore.

So what I look for is:

School Report Card

The Learning Environment Survey

Their bell schedule

Map quest to see how long the drive is

Also when I go in for an interview I ask for a tour of the building. When I go for a demo I ask to stay the entire day so I can get a vibe for the school and the students.

If you're looking in NYC definitely look at Insideschools.org. They send reporters to write about the schools and talk to kids. People can also comment. I found the one for my school to be pretty fair and accurate and the reports for the other two schools in my building are objective. Just make sure to check the dates of the visits and updates- I don't think my school's has been updated in a while.
