When should I stop being a short order cook?
Jack is 21 months old and depending on his mood he will either eat or refuse some of his favorite foods. At what point should I start the "this is what is for dinner" deal and not give him something that he wants just so I know that he ate a good meal?
I know missing one meal or so is no big deal, but I'm just not sure if he is too young to start doing this? He can be like Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to meal time.

Re: When should I stop being a short order cook?
ok I just typed this LONG post and got signed out!
short version:
I asked the same thing of my ped at the 18 month appt and he said NOW! LOL
Aidan may pass on lunch or dinner, we found he eats better at mealtime with just two big meals a day not 3 and maybe a snack for the third. If he doesn't want our dinner, I'll offer fruit but thats it I don't prepare anything else..... then he's pretty hungry for breakfast!

As soon as possible. When they would say they're hungry, I would answer "Then you need to eat more at dinner."
One thing I found helpful is to always serve one thing that they do like. My kids are told not to complain about dinner but to go on a treasure hunt on their plate to find something they do like. Doesn't always work but I rarely make something else for them.

I have to agree. Now's a good time. I refuse to be one. I'm lucky so far though. Both kids eat whatever.

I guess I'm on the laid back side. While I wouldn't cook an elaborate substitute, I'd at least offer some ready made options like cheerios/yogurt/frozen waffle.
