For the most part I am asking in general how people deal with things.

But I know that this can vary so if it's easier - here's a specific situation:

Let's say that your department has some changes (roles/responsibilities) and three of the four people in the dept get promotions and/or salary adjustments because of the new roles. You do not. You are told that you will actually not be taking on any more responsibility so there is no salary change. The reality is that you have taken on a lot more. What do you do?

Agreed. I would also make a list of all the new responsibilities you will be taking on, to show them it isn't just sour grapes.

In that situation, I would definately agree. I was in a similar situation years ago, spoke up and it definately benefitted me.

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

I would speak up. However, I would be armed with what extra responsibilities I have taken on, how they have benefited the company (or will benefit them), and write a proposal stating these things and give it to my boss and CC the boss above them.

I would also update my resume and start to put "feelers" out if I was really pi$$ed about it. IMHO, if you don't stick up for yourself at work, no one will. Sometimes companies will do this to "test" employees. I have had it happen to me in the past, did what I wrote above and not only did I get promoted, I did get a raise.

Good luck! Chat Icon

In that situation I would absolutely speak up! I would do it in as professional a manner as possible, carefully documenting all your new responsibilities, putting together a list of all your accomplishments and special projects, and using it to support your claim to your supervisors.

totally agree! make sure you bring PROOF of the additional responsibilities you have taken on. lay it all out in black & white and try not to let your emotions get involved!

I couldn't stay and just **** it up. It would be on my mind every time I walk in that door and I would begin to dread going to work.

Being compensated fairly for what you do is a huge factor in work satisfaction!

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

I have taken on more responsiblity, actually offered to do some work for a co-worker who has severe carpel tunnel in both hand who cannot type, so I do her typing for her. I would not even know how to approach a salary increase for that--and the woman who I am helping makes $70,000 plus bonus more than me. Chat Icon I am suppose to be a TEAM Player...gag me.

If anyone has suggestions on how I can professionally approach this, please fill me in. I have only been in the business world for 20+ years and a bit clueless on this stuff.

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

Don't **** it up - you'll only make yourself more upset in the longrun and it can lead to problems. Something very similar to this happened at my last job and looking back, I really wish I had said something about it. If you have the type of boss who you can level with, I would just let them know how you really feel. If nothing happens after that, I would consider looking for another job - at least you spoke your mind. Sometimes we have no say whatsoever in these unfair workplace decisions, and I think the proactive approach is the best way to deal with it. Best of luck to you, hopefully something good will come out of it!Chat Icon
ETA - wait, we can't say that?? Okay, my answer was to not do what the first choice in your poll was. Jeez!

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

In the past I've just sucked it up and started looking for something else. When I found something else, I mentioned how I felt about other getting unfair compensation in the exit interview. It really didn't do too much, but felt that I had to say it.

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

Speak up. I would do as others said and bring it to the attention of my bosses that I am doing more work and I should be compensated for it. One thing I did do in one job I had was when asked to take on yet another responsibility, I responded with, "sure I would be happy to do XYZ, if you are going to give ABC to someone else to do, since I couldn't possibly do both." That worked out well.

If I felt like I wasn't being heard or treated fairly, then I would $uck it up while sending out resumes for a new job.

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

I would speak up in a heartbeat.

But, just be prepared in case they respond with the reasons you weren't considered for the new roles...it's possible that they either think your performance is lacking, or they may not realize all the things that you do.

Be very prepared with facts and documents before asking any questions.

I would definitely speak up but I have a good working relationship with my boss and would not feel uncomfortable doing so.

Re: When something happens at work that has a negative effect for you...

I would speak up, but if I felt unappreciated (and it seems like they don't recognize your work or appreciate you), I would look for another job.
