when they start solid foods, does formula intake decrease?
I know, a stupid question. DS started rice cereal a week ago and we just added in fruits/vegetables yesterday. Since then, he has not been wanting as much of the bottle and I'm concerned that he is not getting enough. He really likes the cereal/fruit, so I'm hoping that is just filling him up so he does not want more of the bottle.
Also, the solids are making him extremely gassy, it's so rough right now. In addition, he is waking up a few times a night crying - sometimes he goes right back to sleep after we offer the pacifier, other times I have to get up to feed him and he takes some of a bottle. But last night he had some gas during the bottle. I don't know what is going on - this is after him sleeping straight through the night for almost 2 months!! He is almost 5 months now.
I feel like we are going back in time to when he was around 2 months old and had terrible gas and did not sleep through the night. Does it ever get easier??

we just started giving DD cereal and after a cereal feeding I give her less formula, however the rest of the bottles she gets the same amount.

DS never decreased his formula amount, but I know alot of babies do. My ped always just said to follow the babies cues, if he/she is hungry they will let you know...

DDs formula intake hasn't necessarily decreased, but how often she needs it did...she used to require a bottle every 3 hours, now it's about 3 1/2 - 4 hours...
She still gets the same amount in each bottle...

The formula intake shouldn't decrease as that is their main source of nutrition for the first year. The solids are just an "extra".

Formula intake should be the same... after a meal Landon will want a smaller bottle, but the amount for the entire day is the same. Landon is almost 7 months, and the ped. just said now that his formula intake can decrease as we add meats and more food to his diet.

I know the solids are making him gassy and I feel so bad for him! Maybe I am giving him too much too fast? I am doing 2x per day, but maybe I should cut down to 1x until his tummy adjusts? He has been getting up a few times a night and it's obvious he has gas pain.

I would see if maybe one of the fruits or veggies is causing the gas and eliminate that one. Was he ok with one, and then when you added another he got gassey?
My ped said to wait three days or so to look for a reaction. My DD is doing the same thing, waking 3 times a night upset since we started food. I stopped the cereal for a little and have just been giving her fruit.

DD's formula intake decreased in bottles by 8-10 oz once she was taking 3 meals a day. But, she's getting about 4 ounces in the actual cereal. My ped wasn't concered and said she's still gaining weight and will let me know if she's hungry.

This was what happened with us too. I didn't decrease the amount of formula in the beginning, but started decreasing it when I noticed he wouldn't finish a bottle. By that time he was eating a significant amount of solid food.
I also did this on the recommendation of my ped, because DS was eating 40 oz of formula daily at 4 months and she didn't want him to ever go over that amount. I think at about 10 months she told me he shouldn't be eating more than 24 oz of formula in a day, which was what he had been averaging at that age after I gradually decreased it. He has always been a big baby and she didn't want him gaining too much too quickly. He now drinks 24 oz. of milk a day.
Every child is different. As long as she's gaining weight and the doctor is OK with what you are feeding her, you should be OK.
Maybe try changing from rice cereal to oatmeal - maybe the rice is giving her problems?

I have the same issue, sometimes DD only drinks 3 bottles a day and no even her normal 7 oz.
My Dr said that will happen. She may want more bottle then food sometimes too. As long as she is urinating, we know she is not dehydrated so no worries.

Re: when they start solid foods, does formula intake decrease?
Thanks for the help, ladies. I did ask the ped. if I could switch to oatmeal and they said that they do not give the ok for that prior to 6 months. I think due to food allergies. I only started the vegetables 2 days ago and he's only had the bananas so far - I was instructed to switch it every 3-5 days. Prior to the bananas, he was getting gassy on the rice cereal, but I think it's slightly worse once I introduced the bananas. So it's a combo of both most likely. We decided to try just giving him the cereal & bananas together once per day, late morning/early afternoon and skipping the night feeding of solids. Just until he gets used to it. Maybe it is overkill for him.

Has she been better since you eliminated the cereal?
