when they start walking, does it strike fear in your heart?

DS scared us today. He was sitting on his foam mat in the living room. Wormed himself over to the sofa, climbed up, stood up, and started cruising to the edge. When he got there, he decided to try walking. Stood for a second and then plopped down. He did it so fast, DH was spotting him but I watched with my jaw dropped.

We are so not ready for this at 8m.

So now what? I'm so scared of him, he's totally not stable, he's walking like a drunk Frankenstein. He doesn't want to sit and play he wants to go and I don't know if I can leave him a lone anywhere safely for a few min. I know the foam mat is supposed to be safe to fall on. But I just keep seeing him falling on it and screaming. Am I overprotective? Do I just let him fall?

Do we get a playpen? or fence off an area?
I'm scared he'll push over the fence. DH says the playpen will last us a few months till he starts walking. What do you do?

I'm so not ready for this.

Re: when they start walking, does it strike fear in your heart?

My DS just turned 9 months on the 5th... he's been cruising and climbing on everything for about the past 2 months or so. But now he's getting more and more daring and just climbing bigger things... trying to get down off the couch on his own... trying to walk... his newest thing is to bearlly hold along something with only one hand and walk as fast as he can. He tends to trip over his own feet...since he's still getting used to the whole idea. He does take his fair share of falls, but nothing major. He's acutally learned 'how' to fall if that even makes sense. It used to be just a big thump when he fell, but now he's learned that he can put his arm there to stop the fall. He may whine but quickly forgets about what just happened and moves on LOL. I think regardless of how much you are there with them, they are still going to fall at one point or another. I'm def not ready for everything that he's doing already...it's so hard to keep up. But at the same time, I feel he is learning...each day he's dong something different. Believe me, it does get easier, but it's still hard to witness. Chat Icon

ETA: if I put him in a playpen or PNP, he screams and screams... no matter how long I leave him in there. So that just doesn't work for us.. Before investing in a fence / gate thing, I borrowed my sisters...at first he was OK with it, but as you said, he tried climbing OUT of that! LOL. So, Id much rather have him climb a couch then a tall plastic gate...KWIM? lol. My house is prety well baby proofed, but he still manages to find something to get into. Oh, and my DVDs and CDs...yeah, they live on the floor now HAHA. I pick them up when he finally goes to bed HA

He's never going to learn if you don't let him do it! Each day he'll get better and better at it!
Just make sure the area he is in is baby proofed and he'll be fine. Falling is all part of the learning process.

are you serious? So the fence/gate thing doesn't work either? I'm so not ready for this. I'm having a panic attack.

Well, that was for my DS... he figured out that if he puts his foot IN the gate, he gets higer...and higher. I was sitting on the couch watching him figure it all out... then I took him out and took it down LOL. You can always pick one up, try it out, and may get a few months out of it. Otherwise, you can always return it. Woth a shot! lol.

We have the 6 side play yard. DS can't climb it. It is small criss cross pattern. He can get a toe in it, but can't climb it...He is now a year old and I have been using it since he was mobile...

I totally agree with this - DD has improved tremendously and is an excellent faller (is that a word, lol) now - also, she now can very easily get herself down. I try not to freak out about it - I just watch her closely, brace myself, catch her when I can but sometimes you're too far and I don't want to startle her or scare her by running towards her suddenly so I watch it happen, pause and wait - 99% of the time it's nothing and she doesn't even notice. Every now and then she gets frustrated and cries.

Also, we use gates - my DD is a climber (she climbed a stepladder once - don't worry, I was there very close-by the whole time watching in amazement), but she has not tried to climb the gates - I'm not sure she could - totally depends on the pattern in the gates.

Good luck!

Re: when they start walking, does it strike fear in your heart?

I've been looking at fences/gates online all night, I think I'm going to get this one:

http://www.amazon.com/North-States-Metal-Superyard-Gates/dp/B000U5FOT2/

He's definitely a climber, and a determined one.

thanks for all your responses about learning how to fall, its starting to calm me down

I find that one easier to climb. I have the plastic one and DS can only get a toe in the slots. I am pretty sure it hurts when he bears too much weight on the foot. I put a lot of his toys in there and he will play in it for a while....Good luck....

oh I saw that one, my only issue is that I can't section off an area, I have to create a box with it. Its very confusing, the colorful plastic ones look really easy to climb, I was hoping the vertical bars would be less o.

True. And let me tell you these babies are totally tougher than we give them credit for. If I told you the falls DS has taken in his 3 years it would make you cringe yet he is a perfect, happy, healthy and smart child!!!

Early walking is a scary time. But they need to do it, so just do your best to limit "big" falls. And dont make a big deal out of the small ones.

DS started walking at 10.5 months and all my friends were like oh you're so lucky he is walking...yeah, right - I followed him around for about a month as a human back up net. It was a very stressful time.
