When to start sleeping through night?

I am going back to work soon, and desperatly need some tips or experiences on getting DC to sleep through night. She was awsome when she was younger, but now fights sleep a bit more. I have a ridiculous time of leaving the house at 6AM for work, as does DH. Now she wakes at 3:30ish and feeds, and it takes her FOREVER to get back to bed. Winds up she sleeps in my bed...not even with me holding her but just in my bed Chat Icon So heres what I have as a schedule. Should I possibly dream feed at like 10? Does DC wake during dream feed because that could be a nightmare.

7:30 (6.5 oz) bottle and bed...usually sleeping by 8
2:30 fusses and gets binkey. Goes down until 3:30. Fusses until 4. Gets bottle (5oz).
Fusses until 7. I put her in bed and she sleeps until 10.

Should I make the bottle at 4 less oz? Should I feed her more closer to nightime for storage? How can we move that 4AM wakeup to 7AM? Im thinking she thinks its time to wake up at 4 and thats why there is so much fussing.
She was originally going to bed at 8:30 but was SUPER cranky so I was thinking I was missing her real bedtime.
Sorry so long

My daughter never slept through night until she was 3 months old and even now at 4 months she still wakes up once in awhile...Hang in there..the first couple of weeks you will be sleep deprived and walking like a zombie at work...but you actually get used to it..(at least I did..)

Good luck...

I would try putting her to bed earlier. Adjust it is my 15 minutes each night. Babies will get a good 12 hours of sleep (with 1 or 2 wake ups). Try for 7pm.

If she wakes up at 2:30, give her a bottle and then her binky. Make sure you have everything ready so she won't have the chance to really wake up.

If it works when you bring her to bed, I say go for it I did that, when she stops waking up at night she will sleep though the night in her bed.

I agree! Most babies need 11-12 hours of sleep at night.

I will say she's probably waking and not wanting to go back to bed because she knows that if she does this, she'll end up in your bed. Which i'm sure she likes. Chat Icon

I dreamfed for a while. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Never had a problem with waking ds up while doing it. Chat Icon

My kids slept through the night at exactly 4 months. I realized around 3 1/2 months that i was at fault because I was waking them up at 10PM for a final feeding and they didn't really need that feeding anymore. So we got them on a schedule and put them down in their cribs in the morning for a nap, in the afternoon for a nap and then bedtime was at 7PM. Worked like a charm for us and they started sleeping from 7-7 at that point.

Good luck...Chat Icon

Re: When to start sleeping through night?

DD slept through the night starting around 3 months old. There are nights though that she wakes up at like 3am.

You get used to it! Hang in there!

Interesting...I never thought of the bottle at 2:30. THe binkey is my snooze button. You think Im letting her wake up too much? Feed her as soon as she wakes?

But did the 10PM feeding work before 4 months? You just pick them up when they are sleeping and feed them? Im so afraid burping will wake her
And how many oz do you give during a dream feed?

She is probably waking up because she is hungry and the pacifier, 1/2 hr nap then being fussy again may be helping but she probably just wants to eat.

Try it see what happens, its only an hour difference then when you give her the bottle now. AFter you know she is full the pacifier can be the snooze Chat Icon

Im with you....DD is 13 months old and is not sleeping through the night. There have been a few nights here and there that she has and even for like 2-3 weeks straight at one point, but nothing more than that.
Some babies just arent great sleepers....

Re: When to start sleeping through night?

I have tried every method imaginable (Ferberizing worked for 8 days)...DS is 9 months old and still wakes up AT LEAST once a night, if not 2-3 times. Hope things get easier for you soon!

Other than those 8 days, I have not had a full night's sleep in 9 months. As a result I am getting really STUPID. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

there's no way, I'm sorry to say. DH and I are lucky in that we don't have to show-up to work at any particular time... we just have to get our stuff done... we've had serious issues when Eryk was going through a growth spurt... it was horrid. he would literally sleep only from 12-2, 330-5 and that was IT Chat Icon So I would do the 2-330 and 5-7am shifts, and dh would take over, and I would sleep from 7-9am. only then we would both go to work Chat Icon

Once the growth spurt was over, we did discover that if we fed him at 1130pm (as much as he would eat.. roughly 5 oz), the 2am feeding eventually disappeared. at almost 4 months, he's a bit calmer and can sleep from midnight to 7am occassionally Chat Icon other nights it's only to 6am... but still, it's a vast improvement.

so, from our experience, make sure the diaper is freshly re-done, and feed your baby as much as possible, and maybe it will encourage sleeping in several weeks...

oh, and the 2 reasons he wakes-up: diaper or hungry... usually both.

You put him down at 11:30 or a dream feed at 11:30?
PS: Can I work where you do?

I don't think there is anything you can do to make a baby sleep through the night. My daughter slept through the night finally at 7 months. My son goes down at 11, wakes up at 3 and then sleeps until 7 or 8. That never would have happened with DD.
Every baby is different and will sleep through the night when they're ready. Feeding them more doesn't really work, at least not in my experience.

I agree! I feel SO lucky that DS started sttn at 11 weeks, we tried a ton of things to get him to do it so I have no idea if any of that worked or if it was just that he was ready. I really started trying to get him on a good nap schedule at that point and to make sure he was eating enough during the day. We also had found some things that made his reflux better so I think for us it was just the right combo of things working together. I ready the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and used some tips from that book to get us on track.

if the baby is waking at 7 and then you bring her to bed and she goes back until 10 - perhaps she is getting a little too much sleep in the morning. if she gets up at 7, get her up for a couple of hours, then let her take a morning nap. then have her up for a few more hours and then have her take an afternoon nap. then let her take a late afternoon nap and then put her down when you normally would.

Read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I think it's your best shot. My son doesnt sleep thru the night though and he just turned one so I really have no advice. you do get used to it a little bit though. it get's a little easier, now my son typically sleeps at least until 5 am and then wakes for a bottle. we are trying to get rid of that bottle but it's not easy.

Re: When to start sleeping through night?

My 8 week DD is still so inconsistant..last night she went to bed around 830 and was up at 1130 ravenous..she took a bottle and didnt get back up until 530..now she is in her swing back down for a little snooze.

Each day it is something different..the last 5 nights she has gone for a 5.5-6 hour stretch but i feed her immediately upon waking..she is back out within 30 minutes. I did have that prob with the late night feeding and her not going down, eventually that went away.. We started rice cereal in the bottle because of her reflux and i wonder if that has helped..she was throwing up in bed in the middle of the night like an hour after feedings! No fun..
