When to stop commuting to NYC from Stony Brook

I am currently 35 weeks, 2 days. I am due April 12th. I commute from Stony Brook to Manhattan. it is 2 hours each way. I was going to stop commuting on the 31st, with is about 12 days from my due date.

If you commute to manhattan, or have a long commute like that, when are you stopping? Are you working from home or just stopping work all together?

I commuted to manhattan from Ronkonkoma. My commute total each day was about 4 and a half hours. I stopped working when I was 38 weeks pregnant. I couldn't handle the walking and stairs at penn anymore. I couldn't work from home because I was a teacher.

I no longer commute to NYC...got a job out here a couple of years ago. But I give you ladies who are doing the pregnant commute a TON of credit. I definitely wouldn't keep doing it past 3/31 either. Hang in there!

I commute from Garden City to NYC every day. My Dr suggested I end about 3 weeks early and I can't wait! Chat Icon

Re: When to stop commuting to NYC from Stony Brook

My commute was a little shorter (1 hr. 45 minutes each way) from Port Washington to Brooklyn, and I did it until 39 weeks. It involved quite a bit of walking also (figured in the travel time). But around 35 or 36 weeks, I negotiated to work from home one day a week. It was getting to me at that point, and that made a big difference.

The last week or two I got a ride or took a cab home most nights. And honestly, at that point the commute was really exhausting. But I was glad I didn't take off more time than I did. I went past my due date, and while I wasn't working I was sooo bored and edgy.

Re: When to stop commuting to NYC from Stony Brook

I am in Nassau - my commute is about 1hr30minutes (well it was until I got sciatica and walking takes a lot longer). I'm 37w1d and plan to keep going as long as I can - but I'm not sure how much longer that will be. I'm already almost fully effaced and 1cm dilated - I don't know if that means anything but I plan to base my decision with work on my next appt (see if I'm making progress or at a standstill). I don't want to stop working if I could possibly go late and be home for 3-4wks with no baby.

My dr. told me that at 36 weeks that they ask patients to stop working in the city because of the commute and distance from the hospital.

Re: When to stop commuting to NYC from Stony Brook

other than the obvious physical stress of commuting.... here's a question for your Dr....
at what point does your Dr. think you shouldn't be hours away from the hospital.... in case you enter labor a week or 2 early?

I had the same commute. Stony Brook to NYC. I worked until the day I went into labor. I didn't want to waste my maternity leave.

I asked my doctor today when I should stop working, he asked "when do you want to" I was tempted to say "tomorrow!"Chat Icon

For me I'm going to stay working until at least mid-April so as to ensure I'm at work until my 1 year anniversary with the company so that I can get FMLA benefits.
