When to tell work?
So, I know a lot of people try to hide their pregnancy and wait as long as possible before telling their managers/HR department at work. Can I ask why? What is the benefit to waiting?
Sooooo, basically, how long are you waiting to tell them and why?

When to tell work?
I've told my boss and 2 close co-workers. Other than them I'm going to wait until I hit the 12 week mark. In your situation though I would let them know so you aren't expected to do anything you really shouldn't be doing. I don't see anything wrong with letting others know earlier, I'm having twins so I think I'm just being overly cautious. Go for it! More support and concern never hurts.

Re: When to tell work?
How far along are you? With my first dd (and different job) I told around 12 weeks. This time around I waited longer - about 16 weeks. I did this because I knew changes in the department were happening and I didn't want my pregnancy to affect any decisions they were making. It was pretty hard to hide a 16 week second time pregnancy though!

When to tell work?
I told my boss at 13 weeks because I was very sick and it didn't look like it was ending after 1st trimester (and I was right because it still hasn't).
I told my immediate co-workers after my anatomy scan, so about 21 weeks.
I have not officially told anyone else, but it's getting harder to hide. I'm a manager in a very large department and I actually have no intentions of formally telling anyone else. They will figure it out if they haven't already.

Re: When to tell work?
for me I wanted to wait until 12 weeks just to make sure I was in the "safe zone". I ended up telling them at 10 weeks with my first because I kept coming back late from lunch w/ my doctor appointments... and with #2 I told them around 14 weeks. We had an office meeting scheduled so I figured I'd just tell them all there.

Re: When to tell work?
I just didn't feel like it. I was very very private about my pregnancy and very very uncomfortable with ANY pregnancy attention. I hid for as long as I could- like 6 months.
I knew I wanted to leave their anyway, so I didn't really care.
I thought I'd stay until after the baby and take my new job after that- but as it turns out I accepted my new job shortly after announcing at my old job and left at 7 months pregnant to start the new job.

I'm 8 weeks, so it's early. I just had my first apptmt. yesterday and everything went really well so we told our families and a few close friends. We're not going to announce it to everyone else until 12 weeks. Our department is very secure- like I said we're already very shorthanded so I doubt they could get rid of me or anything like that. I've been here 10 years this November so I'm not concerned about that, just about my ability to continue on like this. Myself and the other receptionists all assumed they would hire a temp. for the next few months but that never happened and they've finally said they have no plans to do so. I'd LIKE to wait til 12 weeks, if our department was full I probably would, but I just don't know how much more I can do.
My only concern is my manager is NOT a mom. She's married but never wanted children so I don't think she'd care or understand as much, ya know?
ETA: I do trust my manager's discretion if not her empathy. I know she wouldn't say anything to anyone else.

When to tell work?
Thanks for asking this---I was wondering what the norm is too! I'm almost 10 weeks and hiding (as best as I can) but I'm pretty sure that my boss noticed my protruding belly in my outfit yesterday. I have a secure job and not worried about that but would just like to wait to tell colleagues until after we tell the rest of our families and friends, which we plan to do when we get results of our Harmony test back (probably in about 3 weeks).
I think the only reason I may tell earlier is I was asked for fly to Portland in a few weeks and if flying then is anything like it was last week, I will be sick for the entire flight and the day after. I have not had morning sickness but my motion sickness is out of control since being pregnant. I don't think I can handle flying again so I might tell my boss why I can't go (I think she'd be fine with that too).

When to tell work?
If you feel comfortable, I would tell them now. I waited a while when I was pregnant just because I'm a pu$$y and was afraid of their reaction. I know a lot of ladies wait in case GOD FORBID, something happens, and some wait for the same reason as me.

When to tell work?
I waited till 12 weeks only because I work with a lot of people and if something happened I didn't feel like dealing with the pity and questions. As far as firing you, Its illegal. Actually most companies would never fire a pregnant women because of the possibility of a law suit. You can refuse to do things that are harmful to you and the baby and legally they cannot do anything about it.

I thought so, but my company is a law firm... and they're.... slippery. But again, I'm not too concerned about it. I mostly wanted to wait for the what if something happens reason, but I think I will tell my manager and ask her to keep it to herself. I also work with my MIL and her sister so I'm sure they've told one or two of their close friends in the office as well. No point in trying to hide it I guess. I'm going to wait til Monday and sit down and talk to my boss about the absurd hours and short lunches. Maybe if I threaten to start calling out more or leaving early (which I won't really do since I want to conserve my days for maternity leave) it'll be the kick in the pants they need to hire a temp.
Thank you all for your responses! Much appreciated!

Re: When to tell work?
I told my boss early, like 8 weeks - she was very sympathetic and allowed for flexibility with appts and such. It was nice to not have to hide not feeling well etc...but now everyone at at my job feels like I have been pregnant forever (and so do I). And I still have 3 months to go. LOL

Re: When to tell work?
I told a few select people right away because sometimes I'm called in to assist with a child who may need restraining, and I wanted to be sure someone would have my back. I shared the news in general after the first trimester.

Re: When to tell work?
I told at 12w with both of my pregnancies. I don't think there's any reason to wait - after you find out the baby is healthy, at least.
