When to tell work you're not coming back?
I have been out on disability since week 16 and will be until baby is born. DH and I have discussed it and while I will likely look for something part time after the baby, I am not going to be returning to my current job as p/t and/or telecommuting are not options for my position. Obviously I do not tell them now as that would be "quiting" and I'd lose my disability right? But I also know that they do not intend on replacing me unless i do not go back to work. So, do I tell them in like my 4th week of disabilty after I have my son? that way technically it's like I have given 2 weeks notice or do I still lose my 2 remaining weeks disability? I really am at a loss for how this works. I have worked at this law office for over five years and do not want to part on bad terms.

Re: When to tell work you're not coming back?
im curious about this too..im not sure with my job. I may have to come back temporarily for benefits reasons..like im not sure if they will make me pay back the health benefits if i quit during maternity leave. so i have to see. i have a meeting with h/r next week.
with my commuting costs and the cost of daycare, my salary would be eaten up right there so for now i think im going to try to stay home and work part time, or keep running my business from home.

it was never officially discussed because i went out on disability at 16 weeks. my job doesnt offer maternity leave per se and so if I had to guess, they would expect me back the standard 6-8 weeks after baby is born.

I would wait until after your disability is over. I don't think that's parting on bad terms. You just tell them that you decided while home with the baby that you have decided to SAH.

benefits are not a concern for me as I have my benefits under DH

They will not make you pay back the health benefits if you leave. Well, at least they shouldn't, since you were still employed at the time.

I couldn't agree more. Don't say anything until your disability is over and you are supposed to come back. Otherwise they can terminate you and you won't be able to collect!
