Re: WHen viewing homes does it bother you when homeowner is present.

I hated it! I felt like I couldn't really look around because they were watching me opening up their closets, cabinets, etc. And I felt like I couldn't be honest so I wouldn't hurt their feelings.
It's also awkward when you walk into a house and the family is sitting in the living room on chairs just staring at you. Like, if you're going to be home, go about your business, don't watch me!
ditto!

Re: WHen viewing homes does it bother you when homeowner is present.
perhaps it was for sale by owner?
just keep in mind, you are also selling yourself! if there is a lot of interest on a property, you have to sell yourself to get the place. sellers will choose the buyer they connect with when it comes down to it and all the offers are on the table and they need to make a decision.
dont let a seller being in the home deter you! walk around with them, listen to them, ask questions and then once you've been through the house with the seller - ask if it would be OK if you and DH walk around alone. they wont take offense to that!

That's a great point. Just because a seller -- or even a listing agent -- might be overbearing, you can always ask to walk around yourselves to take a second look once they are done with their spiel. When I am hosting an open house, I always want to show the buyers who come through the house to point out things, answer questions -- that's my job! But then I always encourage them to take another look around themselves so they can talk privately, and really take it all in.
Don't feel like you need to rush because a homeowner is home. They are not doing you a favor by letting you come in... they want to sell their home! I mean, obviously there are limits, so you shouldn't stay for 2 hours, but most of the time I factor in about a half hour per showing. If you are genuinely interested, there's nothing wrong with taking time you need to view the house.
And as an agent, I never feel awkward about opening doors, closets, cabinets if the sellers are there. If I don't do that and don't let my buyers do that, we are wasting our time because they are not seeing everything they need to see to make a decision about the house. If a seller is standing right there, I will usually say, "is it ok if we open the closets?" and again, 99% of the time, they say "of course!"

I don't like it. I can't speak freely or candidly.

I didn't care when they just said hello and stayed away. But, when they follow you (or worse, show you) around, I was very uncomfy. Who feels ok about just opening someone else's closets? Stay home when selling if you want, but stay away!

Re: WHen viewing homes does it bother you when homeowner is present.
When we were buying I HATED it if the seller/s was home. We did buy a house where the seller was home though.
When we were selling we tried to stay out as much as possible. We left when we had an open house. On a few occasions when we got a call asking if they could come at that time we would try to go out (we didn't have a child at the time so it was possible). Twice we were cooking dinner and the apts were unexpected and late so we didn't leave but did stay in the breakfast nook and didn't interfere at all unless asked.

Re: WHen viewing homes does it bother you when homeowner is present.
We just got done renting out our house on LI so we could move to Conn for DH's new job and he or I or both of us were there everytime people came to look at the house. Since we were renting it DH really wanted to meet the people that could potentially be staying in our house and get to know them a little. We stayed in the living room and DH used to show them around only after asking first if they would like a tour..the agents that came with the renters knew nothing about the house so it was better that DH was there to answer all their questions. After they were done looking at the house they usually stayed out front talking with their agents we didnt follow them around or prevent them from opening any closets or cabinets or hover over them but if DH wasnt there to walk them around they literally wouldnt have known anything about the house. I guess renting out your home is different than selling it too.

Re: WHen viewing homes does it bother you when homeowner is present.
When we were selling our house, I was always there for the showings. But I had my reasons. With infant twins and 2 dogs I was almost always cleaning and straightening up to the very last second before the people got there. But as soon as I let them in I wasn't involved at all, unless they asked me something. I made sure that when they were upstairs I was down and when they came downstairs I went up. Only spoke when spoken to.
