When/Why do you give your DC water?

Jack is fighting his nap - I gave him formula - and a pacfier. He likes when the paci is wet. Can I just give him like an ounce of water? Will that do anything? Hoping that the sucking will get him to fall asleep but wasn't sure what the actual water does to them.

I am sure he can get water. I have been giving Ella water from she was two weeks old and she is only 3 months old. I know some doctors are against giving babies water but her Ped said I can give her a little water everyday.

ETA:In Jamaica where I am from we give water to the babies and the babies are quite are fine.
