I don’t think we will ever go back to the old normal. Nor do I want to.
I'm sorry, what? You like wearing masks, having to stay far away from people, not being able to travel freely, having to quarantine if you leave the state, not being able to hug people, some parents being afraid to send their kids to school, not being able to have weddings and celebrations with large groups of people, proms, graduations, indoor sports being cancelled, the list goes on and on.
What part of the "old normal" are you not wanting to return to, I really don't understand?
I live a much simpler life these days. No need for the way society overindulged in everything.
But of course like every post one here someone needs to jump down someone’s throats and go to an extreme.

I understand what you are saying. Whole I could do without masks, etc, the fewer obligations and less rush is nice. Simpler.

This thread is so depressing. I can’t believe how many people don’t think we will ever go back to normal.
I refuse to be all gloom and doom and think it will never be back to normal.
While I don’t think it will happen this calendar year I fully expect it to be somewhat back to normal by 2021.
I agree with you. I, personally, cannot thrive with such a pessimistic point of view. I also do not think it is realistic that everything will stay this way permanently. We are currently taking precautions to combat a pandemic; when the pandemic ends, and it will, why would a mandate of the precautions continue? Yes, perhaps individuals will continue to take certain precautions, but I cannot see how or why certain mandated acts, such as the wearing of masks in public, would continue once the pandemic ends.

I think maybe what will happen is it will become commonplace is people will wear masks sick with a cold or something

Even if there is a vaccine in November, there is no way there will be enough production and distribution to get it out to regular people by December. So def don’t make travel plans based on a vaccine.
I don’t think there will be an old normal until there’s a reliable (not rushed, untested) vaccine and/or treatment that makes people less afraid.
Expect the market to take a long time to come back. First of all it was on a run for so long, there is always a recession/reset. Second due to covid it will take longer than normal.
Small businesses will take years to recover from this or close permanently. I think once the market starts doing a bit better, less unemployment some people who say have closed restaurants may try again but it will be awhile.
Be patient. See the big picture (masks aren’t that bad) and try to focus on some good from this - more time at home with kids. That’s what I’m trying to do.
While I agree that this has had a catastrophic on small business (and large businesses too) the market has rebounded and its near its all time high from 2/20.
ETA - I don’t know when things will get back to normal. I didn’t think I’d be having my kids doing school from home 3 days a week this fall so I’m done trying to predict and just trying to get through the day...

I don't mean to jump down your throat, it's hard to decipher tone through text. Life isn't simpler for me, we're small business owners and it's been a struggle. We've been working more than ever to keep our heads above water and feel extremely fortunate that we're still open.
We haven't had much extra "family time", I was never staying at home trying out new recipes, going on family bike rides, binging Netflix. Our life has just had added struggles since COVID. I try to keep positive but I really want to cry when I hear people say this "new normal" is here to stay.
I can deal with the masks if I know there's an end in sight but it kills me when people say they think they're here for good. I've been dying to plan a trip to Disney since before this all happened but I can't magine walking around in heat with a mask on.
As someone else mentioned, this "new normal" isn't really living to me. My own parents won't even come into my house and won't hug my kids.
I'm glad to hear that some feel as I do though, the first few responses were making me think I must be nuts or in the twilight zone.

Re: When will we go back to "the old normal"?
Returning to going out without masks and things like vacattions, big gatherings, big nights out, concerts, Broadwy, etc. will be WONDERFUL. But Ali has a point---this time has been great for turning inward, simpler living, and more family time.
Things will likely be better in lots of ways once this threat is dealt with.

Re: When will we go back to "the old normal"?
When we are discussing "benefits" of the pandemic--and I write "benefits" because I don't think the byproduct of so many people falling ill and dying can accurately be dubbed a "benefit"--we need to remember that these so-called benefits are only in existence for SOME people. For example, having more quality time with relatives is beneficial only for those individuals who have nourishing families. Individuals trapped in neglectful, abusive, etc., situations are suffering.

I think 6 months is more than enough "family time " for me. We all are starting to getting on each other's nerves. We're all ready to go back to our lives . And that starts with us packing her off to school bright and early Wednesday morning. Now if only my office would freaking open

Re: When will we go back to "the old normal"?
One benefit for my family is that we do weekly zoom calls. We used to never get together with my family so much. We all feel so much closer. It is actually really nice to see my siblings and their kids every week. They really know us, when we felt so distant from them before. So it is a really great benefit for us. On the flip side, if you had this already and are missing those in person Sunday dinners I can really see how painful this change must be for you and your family.

When will we go back to
If we do not go back to normal, as some people are saying, NY and especially NYC is done. Watch Escape from NY and thats exactly what it will look like. So I pray that we get back to normal as quickly as possible. And when we do i'm burning all these masks in a bonfire.

By maket I’m including total GDP and unemployment etc. I should have said overall economic conditions - my mistake. My company like many is in a hiring freeze. My hubby just had a big pay cut, etc.
And just wait on the stocks.......

When will we go back to
There will almost surely be a second wave, so I would speculate spring 2021 with cautious optimism. Emphasis on the "cautious."
So good news for all of you who don't want to return to normal- lots more people to die and jobs to be lost.

Yes, mask wearing if folks have a virus, feeling ill and thinking they have something contagious, all that we now learned about droplets - just makes evolutionary sense to protect others with the simple use of a mask.
I don't like masks, they make me crazy. But i like its impact on the decrease of contagious droplets. And the dilution of other peoples bad breath.
I like that people keep a respectable distance. Perfumes send me into a tizzy. They give me headaches, so not smelling peoples funk or the eau de toilette (as much) is a wonderful new silver lining during this awful time.
And I can't leave out proper hand washing~ Who knew folks needed flow charts, diagrams and lit highway signs to remind them to use soap.
The introspection that has come out of this has been life changing for me, personally, too. My values have come out stronger.
I don't see any of these silver linings as doom or gloom. And these are only a few of them. But i have to try to find them otherwise it would be a lot more depressing.

This for sure. I would hope when things return to normal that people would start being more consdierate when they have to go into public sick--no matter what they're sick with. But with a deadly pandemic out there now and so many refusing to wear masks and only thinking of themselves...it's hard to picture. I willl certainly be doing everything I can to protect people from illness--even post-vaccine. For example, prior to covid, I admit that I generally did not wear a mask when I went to urgent care or the doctor with somethng that might be contagious. I just tried to stay away from people on the way in and once inside if I thought I had something contagious. I never thought about it. When you know better, you do better.
I wouldn't be surprised if these places retained mask wearing in their cultures. I dislike wearing a mask as much as the next person. But what a small sacrifice to make when you know you are coming down with something--even in a post-covid world. I can see ER's, urgent cares, etc. requiring them.
And you're 100% right, we should be trying to move forward and out of this better and strionger. Positive, compassionate people come from a place of strength.

I am kind of surprised that so many people think that it will never go back to normal - that this is it - that life as we knew it is just over and done with forever - all because of one virus. It is potentially for some people a deadly virus, yes, but over time even without a vaccine we will develop immunity and honestly do we all really think that for the rest of our lives, we will have to treat all people as toxic killers, never see anyone smile, never celebrate anything again, never have our kids educated, never leave our hometown, and stifle our breathing every time we leave our home? Then what's the point of living? Just to exist? Just to "be alive" with no joy whatsoever? No, I don't buy it. I definitely think we will go back to the "old normal" or the "real normal" and not this weird alternative temporary universe we are creating.
I agree.
I keep saying, glad I made it til almost 40 living in a normal world, enjoying concerts, gatherings, going out to dinner, getting drinks, being around people without having to treat each other like we’re carrying Ebola. If things truly don’t return to the old normal, how sad for the younger age groups who haven’t really gotten to enjoy all that life has (or had) to offer.

When will we go back to
I'm all set on the family togetherness. I try very, very hard to make all these magical pandemic memories that people talk about. My kids want no part of it. They were into it in March & April, not anymore. It is not healthy for a child to spend 24/7 with only the people who live in their household. When they are an infant, and toddler, yes. But not older. Kids need extended family, friends, and different routines. I said in an earlier post that I believe this is going to go on for a along time. But I in no way WANT that. I would give any amount of money to go back to pre-March life.

Yes! I keep saying, well I had a good run. But I still wish I had done more before virus with a 98% survival rate destroyed life as we have known it for hundreds of years. 20/20 hindsight I guess. I would have traveled more and seen more shows, etc. But I do feel bad for my daughter. She's only 10. Never got to experience life. By life I mean REAL life. Not this nonsense

Yup!! awful and depressing. And what I find kind of shocking is how many people seem to be OK with how things are and could be for the foreseeable future. (And I’m not pointing the finger at anyone on LIF when I say that, I just mean in general.) I make the mistake of browsing Reddit sometimes and there are people on there in my community who would be perfectly fine with another full lockdown in the fall if rates increase. I personally can’t comprehend that mindset.
If someone had told me back in March that this insanity would still be going on in Sept I wouldn’t have believed it. Frankly it’s probably a good thing I didn’t know

I still can’t believe people really think this is how life will be forever!
If the country, hell the world survived the Spanish Flu back in 1918 and things went back to normal then. I am pretty confident with all the advance technology we have now we can go back to normal with in the next year.
