When we talk about back to normal what are you really saying? Stores are open, restaurants are open, places we go to are open. Yes, schools have been closed but the school year is just starting. I have been out to eat multiple times now. Both indoor and out, and there has never been a wait , even with a 25 or 33% capacity limit. I guess I am not really sure what people are asking for? No masks? If its allowing these things to be open and stopping the spread then why not? People are having weddings and parties, etc.
I hear people complaining about all this doom and gloom but its a lot of the times from people who want things to "go back to normal". Like life is ending because they have to wear a mask.
I don't want to wear a mask. EVER. I don't want my kids to have to interact with kids and be in school with a mask.
I don't want to social distance.
I want to be able to go to and have weddings, parties, large gatherings, holidays.
I want to plan a vacation again and travel without worry.
I want people to stop being afraid of one another and running the other direction so they "don't catch something".
I want to go shopping and eat out among others. EVERY place feels like a ghost town, it's weird.
I miss concerts and movies and festivals and fairs and ALL of the activities that make life fun.
I miss looking forward to things. I am just trying to get by day by day, I certainly am not enjoying my life like I use to just 7 short months ago. I want to feel positive and happy again. Truly happy.
And did I mention, I do NOT want to live my life behind a mask. I DESPISE them. Normal life is moving freely through your day without covering your face. I HATE it. The sooner masks go away, the better.
Life right now is FAR from normal. This is some weird alternate "normal" that SUCKS. School is weird. Kids activities are weird. People's interactions are weird. Being out in public is weird. Life is just plain weird.
So yes, I want our "old normal" back. The normal where we hug, interact, smile, get together, travel and enjoy our lives. What we're doing now is living in fear and simply EXISTING, we aren't LIVING.

I think the thing is, that while you want all of these things to go away, people like myself have re-evaluated many things, so the people you interact with may not do a lot of these things ever again.

Also just wanted to add this is about so much more than wearing masks. Yes, I hate them more than anything, but if I were allowed to do all the things I listed above, concerts, sporting events, in person school full time for EVERYONE, travel without restrictions and quarantines upon return, I'd feel a lot better But the fact is, these things are still not allowed, still not the same, even WITH the masks. I'm not allowed in my office. Even with a mask. Even with social distancing. Even with every single damn precaution that science and the state say is necessary to move forward. It's locked down like it's been contaminated by nuclear fall out. I can't even go there to retrieve things that I left on that damn day in March. It's like it's frozen in time there. They are seriously acting like I will die immediately if I go in there by myself for 5 minutes with a mask on to get my charging cord or my personal items. So it's about so much more than acting like life is ending because of having to wear a mask. Even with masks, many things are still restricted severely with no end in sight.

That is your choice but I would say the MAJORITY of Americans want NORMAL life back. MOST people have no desire to settle into this new, weird, isolated way of living.

yep. Everyone is free to do what they want. Want to sit home and watch Netflix and have your groceries left on your doorstep with no human interaction forever, that is your prerogative. Want to have holidays over zoom and never hug your family- have at it. Nobody is stopping anyone from reevaluating life, having more time at home, staying inside. But others want the choice to live like we used to. And judging by the crowds at the beach, the restaurants, the shore vacation I took, many many people are ready for life to resume as well. I don't think we'll have a problem finding people to do these things with when life does resume. And honestly, if it's a bit less crowded in NYC or at bars and restaurants, etc- I'm fine with that too. I'm not a fan of crazy crowds and lines, so I'd actually welcome it.

Totally agree.
I'll be honest, and this may or may not apply to people on this forum, the ONLY people in my REAL life that have said they are ok with all of this both now, for as long as needed and indefinitely are the people who BEFORE all of this were complete germaphobes. Again, just MY experience. The people who hated large gatherings BEFORE, who never trusted eating out BEFORE and who were literally nervous around everyone and every germ BEFORE seem to be the ones that are cool with life being in this miserable state of affairs forever. It brings them some kind of weird comfort to isolate in a bubble.
As Nell said, anyone is entitled to stay home forever, never hug another person, wrap themselves in latex gloves and masks and never go out into public again BUT that is not practical or sustainable for MOST people. Or for the good of society. There was NOTHING wrong with life before, I loved my old life and I miss it. The human experience is only worthwhile if we have social interactions, touch, and experiences in life that allow us to try new things, see the world and have fun. Getting out into the world and seeing people, traveling, hugging, attending a party or going to a festival are all things that bring humans joy and with that, a positive mindset and good mental health.
Living is isolation and doing nothing with our lives other than to run into a store for 10 minutes with a mask is NOT how we are meant to live. IF that is how one or a few want to live, that's cool. Do you. But the majority of people want normalcy and a functioning, happy life back filled with experiences and social interactions. I will NEVER settle into this weird, isolated way of life and I absolutely want a WAY better life experience and childhood for my children.

When will we go back to
Noone is stopping you from going on vacations or having parties and get together. People have been going to the beaches and doing normal everyday things all summer long. What is stopping you from living life?

i want to reschedule my trip to Florida that I had to cancel in April. But since they are on the quarantine list, I would have to keep my daughter home from school for 14 days after we returned and I will not do that.
DH wanted to book a trip to Europe for his birthday- we can't go to Europe right now if I am not mistaken.
I saw something about weddings not allowing dancing- only the first dance for the bride and groom. Also no more than a certain number of guests.
My friend from work had a cruise booked- that is off indefinitely.
Wanted to take my DD to a Broadway show this summer- nope.
We wanted to go to Hershey this summer, but a mask in the heat and humidity all day long kind of put a damper on the fun so we held off.
We love going to Yankee games and the US Open- no fans allowed.
I love a good concert at MSG or Jones Beach now and then- no concerts
I want to go to my office because I am way more productive there- can't ...it's apparently Covid infested.
I'm not a huge fan of going to the movies but once in a while it's nice on a rainy day. Can't do that.
I've done a lot of things including beach, Jersey Shore, seeing friends, dining out, family gatherings- it's been great, don't get me wrong. But as summer comes to an end and the prospect of cold weather where outdoor stuff isn't an option, it gets a little depressing.

Aside from the mask wearing—and school—you can do most of these things now.
Go on a vacation, host a holiday, see friends. If the virus doesn’t concern you, or them, then you’re free to do these things right now.
Go to the beach, a bike ride, a hike. I’ve done all of these with my kids all summer with no mask.

COVID is stopping everyone from living life.
My family has had THREE weddings cancelled this year, not sure the holidays will be the same, I don't want to vacation at Disney or anywhere else in the hell heat with a mask on my face, my daughter has to take Irish Step classes literally staying away from everyone in her class, kids are not having play dates like normal, haven't had a kid birthday party in MONTHS, stores and restaurants are at a limited capacity which if you have eaten out feels like a ghost town, and on and on and on. Being out in the world feels "off" and people are acting so weird.
Just because some things have opened doesn't mean life is normal. Having family and friends that won't go near anyone isn't normal. Staying away from everyone you meet isn't normal. Wearing masks everywhere isn't normal. Kids attending school either all remotely or for just a few days a week isn't normal.
I want pre-March 13th life back. No social distancing. No masks. No limits and restrictions on how I am allowed to live my life. This isn't normal, I can't actually believe that anyone is settling into this crap like it is.

What we're doing now is living in fear and simply EXISTING, we aren't LIVING.

do I want to wear masks forever no!! But i want to be able to do things.
have a party for my kids, got trick o treating since some are really saying they arent doing it this year, go to concerts, have sports for kids and professional etc.
you know actually being able to do things. we are no where near any kind of normal at all!
Who is stopping you from throwing a party for your kid? Noone but you. Throw the party.
my kids are winter babies I host them at party places each year. we invite lots of kids to their parties.
Please tell me what is open and where I am allowed to do this?
My house layout does not allow me to host kids parties in a way it would work.
that only addresses one of the many things I wrote. we are not near normal at all. being normal will be we can all do what we want go where we want etc. we can not do that now.
My kids cant play their sports, there are no concerts, movies cant even open.
I am confused how you really dont see how things are no where near normal

You're missing the point of everyone's frustration with this. We're all trapped in this bizarre world where nobody wants to go near anyone.
Throw a party? Good grief.

Re: When will we go back to "the old normal"?
I really cannot believe we are sitting here on this board arguing that life is normal right now and we can do whatever the eff we want but just have to wear masks.
I cannot believe we have to make lists of how life is FAR FAR from normal at this point, 6 months into this disaster.
It's like arguing that the sky is, in fact, not blue.
Maybe I'm living in an alternate universe.

It's honestly jaw dropping to me that ANYONE can argue that somehow our lives are normal. WTF??

thank you!! I feel like maybe I am the crazy one.
From people thinking that life is normal now to the people who think we will never go back to normal.

I totally agree.
I admit that I really don't participate much in conservations on this board about masks, the pandemic, etc. However, I am just so gobsmacked by the suggestion that life is largely as it was in February that I had to say something.

When will we go back to
Life is definitely not what we considered normal pre-Covid. The masks and social distancing do put a toll on your mental health.
I do think though that some things that we considered normal, maybe really weren't normal. As an example, kids birthdays. You can still have a party. Have it with a few of your close friends. There is no need to have $1000 parties and try to out do your friends. It is just simpler. That is not a bad thing. Same with weddings, communions, etc. Just have smaller parties. The last 20 years everything has just got bigger and bigger and more elaborate, and for what. Covid made families slow down and not constantly run around and learn to enjoy (or not enjoy lol) being together, again I don't think this is a bad thing. Children are socializing outside instead of glued to their video games if they want to hang out.
While I do want the masks to go way eventually, I think this time really gave me the opportunity to put my priorities in check and to stop trying to keep up with the Jones.

Well not sure what exactly you are expecting? Until people start doing it. Its never going to get back to normal. Noone is stopping anyone from throwing a birthday party or BBQ or whatever. We know the virus isn't disappearing anytime soon. So what exactly are you expecting? You can't blame this on the Govt. If people don't show up or decline or whatever then its because they are still scared . You can't fault people.

I'm sitting here next to my 3rd grader on his 4th Google Meet of the day. Definitely not normal.
I'm fine with dining, slowing down a bit and all but, I really want my kids to have a normal routine again. Which I am not allowed to do. I can't just drop them off at their schools when they are "supposed" to be there! Yes - I can have a party of less than 50 people (which is why most weddings are getting cancelled as they typically are more than 50) and go out to dinner but...

People who share the same beliefs as you. People that want to return to the way things were pre-COVID now. Nothing is stopping you from throwing a party. You can't call it "New normal" or "Old normal" anymore.
Frankly this will be a lifetime game changer like 9-11 was. Society will never be like it was pre-COVID. You will see people voluntarily wearing masks regardless of what the CDC says (like going to the supermarket). People in Asian countries have been wearing masks for years. It is what it is.
I just hope it gets to the point where we have enough immunity that we can make our own mask wearing decisions and be able to do things like travel, eat indoors, go to events with fans/spectators, etc.
I am surprised there isn't more talk about two school districts cancelling in person learning at the last minute.
