We won't.

Of course we will return to normal at some point.

You think people will tolerate this way of life forever? You think people are just going to settle into a life of masks and social distancing forever? You think our kids can survive this hybrid, half school, remote, socially distanced, odd way of education forever? You think businesses can handle the immense loss of revenue forever? You think restaurants can stay afloat at 25-50% capacity forever? You think the airlines and the travel industry can tolerate the immense drop in travel forever?

Of course not.

Society and the economy are barely surviving this right now. There will come a point where everyone will DEMAND a return to normal because it's going to be the ONLY way we all survive. Vaccine or not, the virus will be something we contend with for a good long time if not forever. The world cannot stay shuttered and locked down forever though, humans are resilient and our immune systems will learn to adapt to this virus over time.

For the good of our lives, our livelihoods, our economy, our culture, our way of life and our children's futures everyone needs to hope and pray all of this becomes a distant memory soon and we return to a normal, functioning way of life. None of what we're doing right now is sustainable for the long term and there will come a point where it will become increasingly harder to get people to stay in line with all of these restrictions on their lives.

Sorry, but I disagree. We are forever changed. Just like wearing seatbelts became the "new normal" - so many people resisted them and fought for their "right" not to wear them. We are forever changed since 9/11 - if someone told you you'd have to take your shoes off to get on a plane 20 years ago, you would have thought that was crazy. Soon we'll need enhanced ID to get on a plane. Metal detectors in schools? 20 years ago that was a radical idea. And so many other things that have changed because of major world events. Things change when circumstances demand it. Will some more things go back to the "old normal"? Yes, I'm sure they will. But some won't. We will get used to the "new normal" and it will become the "old normal." We figure out how to move forward with the circumstances we have in front of us - something we've all done, and adjusted to, when circumstances require it.

Asking people to forever keep their distance, limit social interactions and wear a mask ALL of the time are things that completely disrupt our way of life. It's not the same as throwing a seatbelt or taking your shoes off the once in a blue moon most people travel. The restrictions we're talking about go against our human instinct and desire to connect with people. I don't think they will last. I for one will NOT go through the rest of my life with a mask, it's ridiculous.

At some point we'll have to face the virus without a million precautions and safety measures in place and we will have to count on our immune systems to protect us like we've done through the ages. NONE of this was suppose to be a forever thing, this was ALL to flatten the curve and slow the spread as to not overwhelm hospitals. We did that and now little by little we're going to have to start rolling restrictions back until we are back to pre-COVID normal living. Restaurants will eventually have to get back to serving at full capacity, stores will eventually stop counting how many people are in the store, schools will open up more and education will look normal and people will slowly start to get back to life and enjoy things like concerts, festivals, movies, sporting events and more. Again, this was never meant to be a permanent life altering change, I am actually shocked that anyone is willing to settle into this permanently. One day we'll all look back on this and say, "remember that crazy time when we wore masks, didn't go near each other and our kids were stuck at home with a subpar education on the computer"? And then we'll all have a good laugh and thank God life is back to the way it should be.

We could have been gone back to some sense of normal by now had we had a normal administration who encouraged masks and science and didn’t silence the health professionals. Also would have helped to not have a massive amount of dumb people who believed it was a hoax and refused to wear a mask or socially distance. Or governors who entirely dropped the ball and re-opened too quickly and now are the states in red. I saw plenty of geniuses having parties back in April and May calling others sheep. Our country needed everyone to be on the same page and a large percentage failed and continue to fail. 190k are dead and 400k projected dead by January. We are in this position due to selfishness and stupidity. I see people trying to rationalize it as a small percentage of deaths but that means nothing when it’s your loved one.

We won’t be back to any sense of normal until we have a change in leadership and an actual national plan and one cohesive message.

Did we forget the pissing match in the beginning of the pandemic. Remember when governors preached how the federal government can’t dictate what states do blah blah blah. The beginning of the pandemic was a disaster and a power struggle between state and federal. We all lost. And it’s every single person in governments fault...both federal and state. They couldn’t play nice and we all suffered.

There could have been a working “fusion” of both - a president who rallied all Americans to do what was necessary while individual states implemented the actual rules. Instead, we had ZERO federal leadership so the states had no choice but to do whatever they saw as the best course of action. If we had a president who was the least bit inspirational and brought people together, instead of being decisive and denying science, I believe we’d be in a very different place now

We are about to find out if science is right. If schools do the masks and social distancing along with all the other precautions - and no outbreaks ....well science was right. If we do all this and there are outbreaks well looks like science was wrong and maybe trump was on to something. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping (even as a trump supporter) he was wrong and all these things do help. We are screwed if all these ridiculous precautions don’t work and schools can’t stay open, we will never return to normal.

I think more of the outbreaks that will happen are going to be because of close, non-masked contact outside of school. Even if kids follow the rules in school, as long as they’re getting together, especially older ones, outside of school and not observing social distancing/mask wearing, we’re going to have issues. Colleges are certainly more of an issue, but I’m sure parents of teenagers are having a hard time keeping their kids from socializing with others.

Science isn’t wrong. The issue is people ignore science and recommendations. We would get back to normal a lot faster if everyone followed the rules.

The thing is, these kids have been doing that all summer from what I saw and experienced. It's not as if they all waited for school to start to get together with friends outside of school unmasked.
What were they doing all summer?

As the weather gets colder, I think more gatherings will be indoors, which has been shown to be far more risky in spreading the virus than outdoors. They’re also going to have more and extended contact with a larger group of kids indoors at school. While they may be wearing masks most of the time, there’s still lunchtime. They could also pass along the virus to younger siblings who may not be wearing masks correctly the entire time in school. If kids are playing sports, that could contribute to the spread too. That being said, I still think as people let their guard down even more and start gathering indoors more often, especially outside of school, there will be an increase in cases.

I think as a society, we're just going to have to deal with that though. The alternative is to NEVER have gatherings, sports, a proper education, etc. Even if there is a vaccine, it's unlikely it'll be 100% effective and so many are anti-vax anyway so they won't take it. I think more effort should be in finding treatment so that if you get it, symptoms are mitigated and you recover more quickly.

In the meantime, we can't keep going on lockdown or we will just end up playing this game of shuttering at home nonstop for years. I don't know what the answer is to all of this but avoiding the world forever isn't it. Maybe the virus needs to run it's course so we all develop some level of immunity or at least an ability to fight it off if we contract it so that it's no more dangerous than catching the flu or a cold. Honestly, this is no way to live. We need to figure something else out because we are going to end up a nation of socially inept, depressed, lonely people.

Honestly, you’re quite dramatic. Nobody I know has become socially inept, depressed, or lonely as a result of covid.

People lived wonderful lives without the things you keep harping on, many of which just came about in the past century.

People lived without seeing anyone other than their families for literally months on end, and were completely fine.

Dramatic? It's like you're not even paying attention.

Depression throughout this entire pandemic is high. In fact, I went in for my check up and my doctor made a point of asking how I have been coping and offered mental health services if needed because he said they have had patient after patient coming in for anti-anxiety meds and in need of therapy because the social isolation and being mostly trapped at home for months is taking a toll. Even worse for those who are not out of work. And you don't think kids are having issues being kept from sports, clubs, friends and schools? Are you even talking to your friends throughout this because I know so many who have children who haven't been coping well these last 7 months.

NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL.

Sorry but anyone who continues to argue that life is fine, life is normal or that we don't need any of the things in our lives that we've all grown accustom to and enjoy is utterly ridiculous. You're in the minority here.

Re: When will we go back to "the old normal"?

It doesn't matter how any of us feel. Most of us loved life before covid (I did), and most are trying to make the best of things now.

But we can't change reality. Most on here seem to be following guidelines and regulations, but disregard for them, along with the harassment and violence we see on the news about masks--all of the rage and selfishness we see, and the fact that people are refusing to quarantine even when they have symptoms or were exposed mean some things.

These things mean that people will act to protect themselves against the harm that the rage/selfishness/duplicity causes. They will withdraw socially and economically--saving their money and resources because they see that they can't depend on people to do the right things.

You can't force people to reengage, and where spikes occur (which by the way, affect minorities and frontline workers disproportionately-which is horrible)--they won't subject themselves to harm.

Like many have said, denial, tantrums, and magical thinking will only make things worse. We all had great lives prior to this, and we all want them back. We all hate masks and miss fabulous vacations, socialization, and entertainment.

This will get better. But as human frailty worsens it, this period will be prolonged in the meantime.

The effects of COVID have very real implications for mental health. It's good that no one you know has experienced these effects, but they exist and are real.

This is not the first pandemic we have went through!!!

We will get through this.

They were told to wear masks in the 1918 and you don’t see us walking around with them still.

They weren’t doing large gatherings during that time either and we still have them now.

People really need to get a grip.

I get people were affected hard by this but this is not how we will live forever.

Me saying this does not mean I am not listening now what needs to be done. I just believe we will not be like this forever!

The effects of COVID have very real implications for mental health. It's good that no one you know has experienced these effects, but they exist and are real.

Exactly. You hear about it all the time. Drug OD's are up. I saw that on the news just the other day.
Depression is up
People seeking medication for mental health issues is up.
Personally my anxiety has sky rocketed throughout this and I still wake up almost daily with anxiety and dread.
Nobody is depressed or lonely? That's quite a broad statement to make.
And quite uninformed and callous.

Yes, some people who have no regard for science have been doing this all summer. However, if they tested positive, it went into the general daily tally and that was that.

Now, those people are going to be going into a building full of other people, many of whom were following science and data. Now, we have to rely on the people who don’t believe in caution to properly wear a mask to prevent the spread of disease in close quarters. So while these outbreaks may have happened over the summer, they didn’t impact a specific group of people, and there was no point in monitoring them so. Now there is. I’m sure there were faculty, staff, and students who tested positive over the summer, but it didn’t matter how many were from one school because they weren’t going to school. Now they are.

My point is if all these "science denying" teens that are apparently rampant were running around and hanging out in groups, etc and spreading the virus like wild fire with their science denying teenage ways, where were the spikes in cases all over the state?
The infection rate overall in NY has been below 1%for weeks.

Exactly. As I mentioned, I have quite a few friends and family members who are REALLY struggling this year, especially those who already struggled with anxiety and depression. I had a REALLY hard time earlier this year and I don't normally deal with depression and anxiery myself. Many kids have had a tough time as well.

It is SO naive and ignorant to think that a worldwide pandemic where people were forced into their homes for months with little to no social engagement would suffer no ill effects. Humans are social creatures by nature, they need and crave human interactions and contact. This is hard on everyone.

None of these college kids are even that sick - there have been zero hospitalizations and most have no or cold like symptoms, they were just tested as they were exposed to a few individuals who have had pneumonia like symptoms.

I do believe in the science - and the science says the majority of us are going to get it, the virus isn't going away.

We flattened the curve, our kids should be able to go to school full time. It's day 2 and we are asynchronous. I got up at 6am to work since I know I'm going to be swamped with school work.

Nobody wants to hear that though.
The real numbers to be looking at are hospitalizations and deaths- not positive cases.

Tell that to this person and tell me if you still agree.

You were implying that college age students are going to be doing the same sort of activities sitting at home for the summer vs. what they would do while being in college.

That couldn't be further from the truth and I think you are going to start seeing spikes in counties with high college populations.

I am curious if you have had COVID or have the antibodies. I too wear my mask "as required by the CDC guidelines". But you should also know there are some people who have gotten this that weren't hospitalized yet they have had ongoing and lasting issues due to this.

I get it, but what are we supposed to do? Never live again because of what MIGHT happen in the future from a having an asymptomatic or mild case?
Hide forever?
For me, personally, that is not how I chose to live.
I'll be careful of course. I'll wear my mask to protect others in case I do have it.
But I can't live in crippling fear that I might get a mild case and have issues later.
I'll do my best to prevent it. Just like I do my best to prevent cancer, heart disease, flu and everything else that can kill me or give me life long complications. But that's all I can do.

You haven't been watching the news. COVID is blowing up in Otsego county. Why? SUNY Oneonta.

https://www.news10.com/news/ny-news/covid-19-cases-at-suny-oneonta-grow-to-684/

https://www.thedailystar.com/news/local_news/covid-cases-continue-to-rise-at-suny-oneonta/article_746bf8c2-f244-11ea-ac6d-cbb75ae541f5.html

Otsego county infection rate for the past three days is 3.3%, 3.8%, 3.9%.

https://covid19tracker.health.ny.gov/views/NYS-COVID19-Tracker/NYSDOHCOVID-19Tracker-DailyTracker?%3Aembed=yes&%3Atoolbar=no&%3Atabs=n

I was referring to the OVERALL infection rate of the STATE. Not each county.
The state as a whole.
This is what I was referring to from the NYS page
Link

You were implying that college age students are going to be doing the same sort of activities sitting at home for the summer vs. what they would do while being in college.

That couldn't be further from the truth and I think you are going to start seeing spikes in counties with high college populations.

I was talking about high school age students because the OP said older students and we were talking about schools opening etc so I assumed K-12 schools.
I know colleges are different since they dorm together etc

You are right. We should get back in our houses permanently due to thinfs like this.
Absolutely.
You are free to do so by the way.
Nobody stopping you.
I had the flu once so bad I said the same as her- I woudln't wish this on anybody.
It was bad.
As was a kidney stone- I wouldn't wish that on anyone either.
But I love how the media uses big dramatic statements like that as headlines.
I WOULDN'T WISH THIS ON ANYONE!
And then you read the article and....

Amanda Muro, 18, is living in an isolation dorm with mild symptoms

So what is it that I'm missing??

I am curious if you have had COVID or have the antibodies. I too wear my mask "as required by the CDC guidelines". But you should also know there are some people who have gotten this that weren't hospitalized yet they have had ongoing and lasting issues due to this.

Mike Tyson once said "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth".

I tend to agree. But I will also say that the people who yell and scream on here "THIS IS NOT NORMAL" better start realizing that there will likely be a "NEW normal" to come out of this.

This will be like a 9-11 event. The "old normal" of pre-911 is no longer here. I think the same is going to happen with this. We could have wiped this virus out and I think you will still see people in supermarkets wearing masks, on the plane wearing masks. You will see people taking hygene and sanitizing a lot more seriously going forward.
And I can't say that will be a bad thing as it may help curtail other things like flus. You can't compare this to the pandemic of the early 1900s.
People are a lot more informed now and the media has a much bigger influence. With that said will I be wearing a mask in a supermarket once CDC advises we don't have to? Nope. But that's me.

9/11 didn't change life forever, it changed life for a moment in time and then we returned to normal less a few extra safety precautions at the airport. What about our lives day to day is different post 9/11?

People can CHOOSE to mask up forever or stay home or take whatever precautions they feel give them peace however, at some point the world will move past this and social distancing and mask mandates will go with it.

Hopefully everyone continues to wash their hands like they should have been doing before this. Chat Icon

Our individual day to day didn't change much. Horrific event but life moved forward. Life will move forward from this event too.
