when will you stop administering flea protection to your dog this year? (If you don't use flea protection year-round)
If you don't use flea protection for your dog year-round, when will you stop administering it this year?
Do you wait until temps are below freezing?
I'm nervous to apply the Advantix after that post about adverse reactions (which I then did some research into). I need more time to consider alternate protection.
TIA

I am going to stop during the winter months this year, or at least spread it out more like every 2 mths. But it HAS to be freezing out, so maybe late Dec-Feb.

November is usually the last month I apply it.

Yeah, we were using Frontline and for some reason, we switched.....and I can't remember why now. I have 6-week old twins so my brain isn't working at full capacity! Lol I'd never heard of probs w/Advantix til that other post.

In what I read on the EPA website, the majority of animals that had issues with treatments were small dogs. I don't remember what the figure was but I want to say under 25 pounds?
Not sure how large your dog is but I'd probably not use Advantix at all, and go for Frontline. I provide flea and tick prevention year round because it only takes a day of warm temperatures for those little buggers to become a problem again. I'd rather not have to worry, especially with the warmer winters we've had of late.

We use Revolution on our dog from April - October and have for the 10 years we have had him and we have never had a problem with fleas/ticks. The only downside is that in April, you need the vet to do a heartworm test because of the chance he got heartworm during the months he was off of it. If you keep them on a preventitive all year round, you dont need this test done.

Just want to add...if you use Frontline, you also have to use heartworm protection. We use Interceptor (pill for heartworm) and Frontline. That way if I don't use the FL during the winter, heartworm protection is still provided. I know a dog that got heartworm from not being on heartworm meds in the winter.
