When you are going to have work done on your house & get estimates...
how many estimates do you get?
I literally called to make appointments with 12 of those fence companies on the other thread. Do most people get that many for projects?

12 is a lot! that could be time consuming. we've only done pretty small projects so i get 3-4 estimates depending on how many recommendations i have.
for fence companies, i had a lot of recommendations so we went to visit some of the local showrooms first to feel them out. we made appointments with the ones we liked from there.

We got 16 for our painting job... No idea why... we just got such a huge range of prices.
Normally we get 4 or 5.
12 seems high to me - but then at least you'll have peace of mind.

usually 3 or 4
for our driveway i think i called 6 places, 1 never showed up, 1 was horribly rude at the appt, so that left me with 4 quotes to compare.
12 seems like overkill to me.. and an awful lot of time and energy for you to put into it. As well as that many more people you have to tell that they didn't get the job..

my husband and I are so lazy, we only do 1. We usually use someone recommended and assume it was a good deal.

We usually only get one, b/c DH knows someone who has a friend, cousin, uncle, dog in the business and they are always the best.

2-3, but we've never had anything really extensive done to our place that would make me more nervous ... if we were doing major renovations, I'm sure the number would be higher.

I got 6 quotes from tree companies, and I used the lowest one to leverage the company I really wanted to do it, to do it for that price! 
12 is a lot though.

We are getting porch added on and we made 2 appointments.
We have a close family member who is in a similar business, we are asking him to look at the estimates to make sure we aren't getting hosed.
