When you say you are going into the "city" what do you mean?
Someone on another board (who doesn't live in NY but used to for a few years-if they are even telling the truth-lol!) claims that if I am saying that I am driving through the city, I could mean any of the 5 boroughs.
I don't know if it is a LI thing but when I say I am going to the "city" I am only going to Manhattan.

ETA: I live and teach in Queens so I will respond that I teach in the city, since they are city schools.

We live in brooklyn so the "city" is Manhattan. I generally say Manhattan though and not "the city".

I've been a Suffolk girl all my life, but to me that's "the city". Of course, I recognize there are 5 boroughs in NYC but "the city" will always be Manhattan to me.

i live in brooklyn, so the city means manhattan.
BUT....... when people ask me where i live i sometimes just say "the city".
my answer depends on who i'm talking to. whether i say "the city", "brooklyn", or "williamsburg"
