you should show up!

We are hiring a sales assistant and a girl was suppose to come in today at 3:30 for an interview, and she hasn't shown up yet! I just don't get it. If you say you are coming for an interview, show up. If you change your mind, at least call!

Chat Icon I'm gonna say ... NEXT! If this is her best behavior, her best foot forward, no way should she be hired!

My department just did this three months ago. The girl called to cancel her interview three hours before because the thought she MIGHT be getting strep throat Chat Icon

Then she showed up 10 min late to the rescheduled interview because "the cab couldn't find the building". I work in a FAMOUS building above a major hub of transportation - this was a crock of sh*t.

And they freaking hired her Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

First day, she comes in at ... drumroll ... 10:45am. "No one told me what time to be here."

She's still here Chat Icon Chat Icon And she s*cks. Big Time. (Shocker, right??)

They really just needed to fill the position (I actually heard my Director refer to her as a "warm body") but STILL! hello - warning signs?!?!

Anyway, my point is if you have any say in this decision, please learn from my department's mistakes.

I just finished a round of interviews -- 3 no shows and 2 people were late.

I had a guy show up an hour late once. He said he got lost Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You know how many times I've done a dry run so I knew where I was going so I wouldn't be late?!

If you can't make it on time to the interview - how do they know you'll make on time to work !!!!???

I have people going interviewing for $60k positions even $150k positions and they are no show.
It's so embarrassing.

Why, just last week a candidate was sch'ed to have a phone interview. When the client call him he never answered.

I spoke with him yesterday and he said he went outside to feed his dog and must have missed it.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I deal with people like this everyday!

Re: When you say you will be someplace for an interview...

OK - I'm going to give the view from the other side - I had a horrible interview experience last year. I am always SUPER early for interviews - I usually end up sitting in my car a good 20 minutes before I go in and am still really early. Last year, I had an interview at a high school - it was at the end of the school day and I couldn't leave my school early so I wasn't giving myself as much time as usual, but still had time. The school was about half hour away from mine, in a North Shore Suffolk County district - windy roads, confusing, etc. In any case, the directions I printed out from yahoo maps was incorrect - told me to make a left instead of a rightChat Icon - I stopped at two gas stations - they had no idea - I was calling the main office of the school asking the secretaries to let the dept I was interviewing in know I was late - I was calling the dept myself - secretary left so no one was picking up - call back main office - they put voicemail onChat Icon
I ended up driving around - couldn't find where I was supposed to go - ran into a cvs to get directions and now my cell phone dies!Chat Icon I kid you not, this was like a bad movie - in any case, I got to the interview 20 min late - horribly embarassed because I couldn't call again with a dead phone. This was a horrible horrible experience for me and as someone who is painfully early every other time, situations can happen to anyone!
Sorry this is so long, but just wanted to share the other side from someone who wasn't a slacker and didn't "not' care about the interview or the job.

From your description, though, you don't fall into the same category as the others mentioned. You called the office several times to let them know you were being late. Sometimes people can't help being late, and I don't think an interview should be decided just on what time you arrive, but if you call ahead to let them know, it show that you care about their time, and are considerate. It doesn't take much to call and say "I'm running late, I'll be about XX minutes late, but traffic is really bad, I had a flat, I'm lost, etc..." It's just common courtesy, I think.

So true. There are very little excuses good enough to be late for an interview. Talk about making a good first impression. Some people just have no clue whatsoever.

Re: When you say you will be someplace for an interview...

Well, I agree, since I am in HR, I have seen this happen before where people are super late or don't show up at all and of course it is rude and they most likely lost their "chance". BUT. Listen to what happened to ME yesterday Chat Icon
I had an interview at 830am. I get up early, get ready, nice suit and heels, etc. I let the dog out, she comes back in...as soon as I go to leave, she races out from behind me and goes into the yard to play!! Would not come in for anything...totally thought it was playtime. So now, it's 810 (the place was 15 min from my house, leaving at 8 would have been perfect). I finally get her in by luring her with a piece of cheese and a bone. So now I am rewarding her for being bad Chat Icon I finally leave and have to be a speedracer to make it there on time...pull in and go to the building and find out I am on the wrong side. Now it's 828am. Go back out to the parking lot, and drive to the other side of the building, and there are no spots. Just like Michal said, it was like a bad dream!! Get a spot 85000 rows down and race in heels, 20 degrees out, no jacket to the door. Call the lady, explain that I went in the wrong side, but still...felt like an a$$. Then I had to go in and complete an app. which took 15 min. I felt like it was over before it even started....Chat Icon oh well.

So when the girl showed up yesterday, so was 15 minutes late.

When asked why she was late she responded with "I was having a problem with my washing machine" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
