Depends on who it is - just me and DH, I plate the food in the kitchen and bring to the table. When we have a group over, I usually will put the food on serving dishes and place on the table family style.
this but my hubby does all that. I just serve drinks. He puts the table on the plates and on the table and calls us to dinner.
Family dinners at others houses we all just set stuff out. When my Dad lived with us we'd still plate for all in our home (up to 10ppl)

When it is DH,DS and me I serve (or DH serves) us. When it is my parents or inlaws, siblings we tend to do more family style.

We do this also my dds are only 4 so they can't really serve themselves but when we have other people over its always family style

My kids are still young, so I plate the food and serve them. When it's a bigger group or we have company for dinner, it all goes in the middle and you help yourself.

Usually I put everything in the table and DH and I help ourselves. My kids are little so I make them a plate. Sometimes, if I'm being lazy, I don't feel like carrying all the food to the table so I'll make everyone a plate and bring only that to the table. DH and I just get up to get seconds if we want.

when you serve your family dinner...
For those that bring the food to the table so everyone can serve, are you transferring the food from the pot/dish it was cooked in and putting it a serving bowl or putting them on the table in the pot/pan with a trivet/pot holder under it? I'm thinking if I transferred the stuff to new bowls, the amount of dishes would double!

I don't like when someone else plates my food for me, I have to do it myself.. DH doesn't care. So usually I leave the food in the kitchen, put it on plates & bring it to the table for us. If we have people over, I put the food out on the dining room table for people to help themselves.
