My dad used to be the donations coordinator at The Inn in Hempstead, it's right by Hofstra. I know they are always looking for volunteers on holidays.

Just an FYI-I donate to them all the time.

You may want to contact the East Farmingdale Organization that recently burnt down. They are looking for all different types of help.
Not sure what will be available Thanksgiving Day but it might be worth a call.
DH and I have a call in and are waiting for a call back -- but we did not specifcially request Thanksgiving Day.

Omg, I'm sorry, but I read the title of the thread and thought you meant you wanted to volunteer your family out to someone else. You know, like to get them away from you Sorry, I just had to add that.

FYI, from what I remember from when I used to do a lot of volunteer work, the INN always has too many volunteers on Thanksgiving. That's when everyone wants to help. They need people on regular days, they might actually turn you away.
Also be warned that with a little kid, they won't let you work in the soup kitchen, you will likely be sorting through donations in the back. Little kids can't be around the food prep areas and they won't let them work with the clients for their safety.

Re: Where can I volunteer with my family onn Thanksgiving?
I used to be a case manager for a residential treatment program for people with mental illness. We often had to work holidays. One of my friend's and her family used to donate and serve dinner to the clients who had no family members if I was working. We were expected to do some kind of dinner event for them anyways as a program and it was nice to have the extra financial support and help with serving and cleaning up.
Maybe there is a similar program on LI that you could connect with.

That is a great idea.
Also I would contact your local Church or Temple and see if they are doing any meals that day and would like to have people come and help serve or cook. I think that a lot of the churches do something on the holidays.
