I'm thinking of going to VA, but now I may have to check out NC.

Re: Where do New Yorkers go if they need to move to a less expensive area?
We moved upstate and unfortunately taxes are just as high (we are in one of the better school districts in our area and pay about $10k in taxes) but the prices of homes are much more reasonable. As a PP mentioned, well-paying full time jobs are sort of hard to come by. I noticed that my coworkers all work REALLY hard (11 hour days with no lunch are the norm, emailing and texting their boss all hours, weekends, etc) for a pretty low salary.
Some of the upsides are: Relatively close to get back to LI, barely ANY traffic, overall cheaper cost of living (car insurance, afterschool programs for kids, daycare all seem significantly cheaper compared to LI). Good luck!

Yeah, I don't think I mentioned taxes in my post, but my parents pay close to what we pay here on LI, and they live in what many would consider the boonies.
Having grown up there too, while the school district was great, I feel like I also missed out on a lot of diversity that you see here on LI.
Many people are not as liberal either.
I have had to block most of my old HS classmates because of their political thoughts on FB.

We moved from Queens to PA a year ago. We are very happy here and DH can still commute to NYC for work.

Re: Where do New Yorkers go if they need to move to a less expensive area?
We moved to Litchfield Cty, CT - we really like it and takes me about 2.5hrs to get to my parents in mid-suffolk. Would recommend hartford county too bc there are a lot of businesses in the city. My DH makes a lot more here than he did when he worked right outside of manhattan in NJ and our taxes and home cost are very low compared to LI

Where do New Yorkers go if they need to move to a less expensive area?
A very good friend of mine recently moved to the Raleigh/Durham area of NC and loves it. She said there's a lot of ex-NY'ers there.

We live in the DC area. The cost of living is significantly less and there are plenty of jobs. Schools are great. People are nice. We love it down here.

We moved to PA (Lancaster County) We had to go to a state where DH's pension wasn't taxed.
I had family move there like 16 years ago .... They love it there ... 3 hours from NYC and great food lol .... They went to the smoke town schools

We relocated to CT as well, on the Fairfield County/New Haven County line.
DH makes more here than he did on LI, plus he was actually able to GET a job here, and most of our costs are cheaper, and what isn't cheaper balances out to be about the same.

We wanted to cut the umbilical cord to NY so we moved far, to the DFW area of Texas.
