Where does Morning Sickness end and Hyperemesis start?

8 weeks now and, as with my first pregnancy, things are getting out of control. I am on Diclegis but am still getting sick 4-10 times a day. Bizarrely enough, I don't mind getting sick as much as the constant stream of excess saliva and the horrible taste in my mouth 24 hours a day.

I'm just looking at the calendar and wondering how I will be able to go on like this for another 4-6 weeks.

Has anyone had to take a leave of absence from work during the first tri? Would short term disability cover something like this?

So desperate. Chat Icon

I had to take Diclegis & Zofran together just to take the edge off, still got sick multiple times a day.

I needed IV treatment a few times for HG, but there are varying levels. If you really feel like you cant function at all normally, it's probably more than just regular pregnancy nausea. Definitely speak with your OB.

I DID speak with them. They were just like...here's Diclegis and take sips of Gatorade so you stay hydrated. That was a few weeks ago though. I would say I am getting pretty close to complete non-functionality.

If I didn't work full time and have a toddler it might be easier but this just feels impossible. More than anything I am starting to get really depressed and resentful of this pregnancy. I feel really horrible for my 21 month old DD who keeps saying "Mama sick" when I'm retching at the toilet and walking around with a plastic bag to spit into.

I know it will pass eventually so I'm just hanging on for dear life I guess but I wasn't sure if obtaining an official HG diagnosis would help me in any way.

Where does Morning Sickness end and Hyperemesis start?

Have you lost weight? That is the first thing Drs and insurance will look at. I'm a 2nd time HG mom so I know what I'm like with HG. Can you eat at all? If the answer is no then you need further treatment. I'm 21 weeks tomorrow and still get sick on a daily basis. I'm on as needed iv treatments as I lost 7 pounds in 7 days. They need to check if you have ketones in your urine as that will help determine how hydrated you are. I'm on the zofran pump, diclegis, phenergan suppository, Prevacid 24 and unisom and still throw up nightly. So far I'm down 17 pounds but my oncall nurse and I monitor my weight daily because any significant drop means I'll be back on IVs.

Most Drs are very uneducated on HG and will tell you that you are fine. With my dd I lost 26 pounds by week 9 and was throwing up blood. It took my screaming at the dr and my dh holding me up in order for them to help me. This time I'm much more educated and am very clear cut on the treatments I need. Most people and professionals do not take HG seriously.

On my HG fb page we have lost two members in the last couple of weeks because of organs shutting down and then not getting the treatment they need.

Do you want me to link you to the HG fb group? If you post there the administrators should be able to direct you on next steps.

I want to add throwing up 4-10x a day is not normal and I'm prone to be cautious and say you have HG but I'm not an expert. I hope you're go away by the end of the first trimester. I'm the unlucky one that will be throwing up till I give birth as I did with dd.

First of all, THANK YOU so much for your response and my heart absolutely breaks for you.

I totally agree with the doctor not taking me seriously, it's such an isolating feeling to have someone tell you to sip gatorade like that will help ANYTHING.

And interesting that you bring up the weight thing - I haven't lost weight - in fact I've already gained 5 lbs because the only thing that makes me feel better is putting a constant stream of carbs in my face. I do throw up after eating though, just not every single time I eat. Like, last night I ate a bowl of mashed potatoes (I know) for dinner and then threw it all up 20 minutes later. I took a shower and ate a bowl of cheerios and went to bed and was able to keep the cereal down. I'm also usually able to keep ice cream down as long as it's plain vanilla or chocolate. But forget about protein or anything with nutritional value, I can't even make myself swallow it anymore. I can't drink water at all. I can only drink juice (apple or orange) if it is so cold that it's half frozen.

Based on what you are saying, perhaps I don't have HG, maybe it's just extreme MS or some gray area in-between.

Some people with HG can eat. There are different levels of it. I'm not even bad HG but I still suffer. Dd was worse in some ways and this pregnancy worse in others. Like at 21 weeks I can eat bland food till about 3pm, 4pm. I throw up everything I eat for dinner every night but I can keep a fruit snack and protein bar down at 11pm which keeps me through the night. I have incredibly bad food aversions which I did not have with dd.

Are you on fb, if so pm me and I'll pm you the link to the fb page. I will need your name so I can approve you as they have to do a monthly purge because of fb trolls.

The fact that you can eat but still are throwing up so
Much is the main concern. You really need to be tested for ketones to see how your body is processing fats.

The fact you can't drink water is one of the major HG symptoms. HG patients usually can't deal with water. I mix all of my water with iced tea or pedialyte. I need the flavor. If you can handle ice cream pick up ensure. I don't know where you live but if you are close to islip I can drop off a bunch of ensures. With dd they were one of main sources of nourishment with this pregnancy I can't do milk based products so they are sitting in my fridge.

Please pm me with any questions you have HG or even extreme morning sickness if not something you should have to suffer through.

Sounds like HG to me. I had it, too. In and out of the hospital for fluids. I wanted to punch anyone who asked me if I tried ginger ale in the face. I also couldn't keep water down.

Will your OB give you zofran? I am positive I wouldn't have my DD without zofran- I kept trying to go without it in the beginning and my OB said "it's zofran or miscarriage, take your pick." I was severely dehydrated and malnourished.

I was able to work from home otherwise, yes, I would have had to go out on disability. I used to lay on the bathroom all day with my laptop next to me and sort of half roll to it occasionally.

We are one and done, largely because I would never be able to care for DD with HG and I have a new job where I can't work from home and I cannot afford to take off for 9 months.

I sent you a FM. Thank you so much. Would there be any way for me to know outwardly if had ketones in my urine? Like a symptom or sign of it?

I was miserable like you, yet still able to work even though I was throwing up multiple times per day. At around 10 weeks, I was dry heaving for hours on end and had to call out sick, it continued and I couldn't stop at all. It got to the point where I was sitting in the bathroom for over an hour and a half and had nothing left in my system, so Dh had to bring me to the hospital. That's kind of where the hyperemesis started. They gave me zofran and I was a changed person. I was only throwing up like 2 times per day and continued to take zofran until about 20 weeks

Personally, the diclegis did nothing for me to help. I would suggest calling your OB and getting the dissolvable zofran tablets. It was the only way I was able to function throughout the day

Unfortunately, no. There are test strips but I was given them by my oncall nurse.

It ended around 25 weeks or so I would say. I remember one day saying to myself wow I only had to spit once today and then shortly after I went back to normal. Hugs to you bc it def is just awful.

How long have you been on diclegis? I was non stop sick until about 10w and was on diclegis and now I feel like I can function. I know it can several weeks for the diclegis to work and I have been on it now for 3 weeks and its so much better. I still have nausea and have vomited but nowhere near what it was.

I can only take diclegis at night since it makes me sleepy but have my zofran just in case it gets bad during the day.

I didn't have HG but I have a bladder disease and I used to have to test my urine to see what was going on. I got these from Amazon that test a whole bunch of things, and I remember ketones were one of them.

I hope you feel better! Don't accept this doctor's indifference. Keep asking for help! Test strips

I've been on the Diclegis about a week now. I had to scale back the dosing because it was making me so groggy and dizzy when I first started but last night I started the maximum dose again and I am feeling a bit better this morning.
