I believe the middle is the safest, but We have ours on the passenger side because I am too short to get him out of the middle.

this is where we have ours in a Ford Fusion. I have to get in the car to get him in and out, but at least I'm not a nervous wreck while driving

I have DS behind the passenger seat. We only have the LATCH system on the 2 outside seats and that is safer than the seatbelt (according to the cops who installed my seat).
When he was in the infant seat, he was in the center.

The reasoning for the middle (for most cars. Some cars do not recommend the middle), is that there is the most amount of "crumple zone" in case of a side-impact. The next "safest" spot is on the passenger side. The reasoning for that is that when you are parked on the side of the road, you will be getting DC in and out of the car away from traffic, instead of directly in the way of oncoming traffic.
Of course, if you have 2+ DC, you're kind of stuck with whatever you can make work...
