Where is your DC's play area in your house?

DH and I are trying to decide where to set up DS's play area (DS is 6 months old). We have a spare bedroom next to his room which is right off the main living area/kitchen that we could use, or we have a game room upstairs. My concern with both of those places is that they're secluded and one of us would be stuck upstairs (there's only a spare bedroom and a bathroom upstairs, our room is downstairs) or be stuck in the 1st floor spare bedroom.

I'd really like to set up the play area in a corner of the family room because it is open to the kitchen, but there's not much room and the sectional couch would block me from being able to see him on the floor if I was in the kitchen. Plus it's tiled, even though I bought those thick foam letter squares to put on the floor.

What did you do and do you have any suggestions?

I have hardwood floors and I got the foam ABC mats as well and they are down in my living room. We don't have a lot of room either.

If I had your house, I would probably set up the little room downstairs with everything, but also keep stuff in the living room too.

Right now the baby has a playarea in the corner of the livingroom....once his room is finished his toys will go in there and we'll take them out during the day..

The older girls keep their toys in their rooms or in the basement and take them out when they want to play with them...

Upstairs we have an open den, that has somehow turned into a playroom.

Re: Where is your DC's play area in your house?

When the boys were little, we lived in an apartment. Although they had their own bedroom - their toys were usually in the main living area so that I could keep an eye on them while I got other things done (folding laundry, catching a bite, etc.).

When we decided to get a home we deliberately looked for a room that could function as the MAIN playroom because they just have so many darn toys! This house has a finished basement and it is pretty big. That's their 'main playroom' and it is where their video games, their computer and the majority of their toys reside.

HOWEVER - they also have space carved out in my office for their books and homework centers. The backyard is also littered with toys and they have their swingset/playhouse out there. And of course - in true kid fashion - their toys have also been found in just about every other room in the house.Chat Icon

Our den has turned into his playroom. Most of his toys are in there and that is where he plays the most.

But I do have some toys in his room and a few in the living room too.

We have an office downstairs that we keep some of the toys in-the bigger items we keep in family room-everything in its corner, taken out and put away as we play throughout the day.

Right now it's the living room....

Until DH gets off his lazy bum and gets the lower level den/family room/playroom finished, then they will be only allowed play things downstairs and I get my living room back!

lol - I know that feeling.

We have a small playroom off our downstairs hallway (a 1/3 of a converted garage) as a playroom. Then half my family room is also covered in toys. They also have tons of toys in their rooms and some in most other rooms of my house. We tend to spend most of the play time downstairs in the family room or playroom though.

EVERYWHERE!

Mostly the family room and his room though. Eventually, I'd like to finish the basement and make it a playroom.
