I am in the same boat. I was able to have separate parties for my first 2 kids but with this next one, I won't be able to. I've thought about maybe waiting until he's close to 1 & have a Baptism/1st Bday combo but I'm not too thrilled with waiting a year to Baptize.

Both are important events but my personal opinion is that the christening is more special so I would do the bigger party for that. When my kids were first born, most family and friends were asking me when & where the christening was going to be but nobody asked about their first birthday party as it approached. I didn't do a big party for either event though.

I don't think there is any correlation in size and importance. We had a nice but small restaurant party for DD's christening. We're not doing a big birthday party. The most we'll do is parents and friends at the house.
ETA I still haven't sent the christening thank you's and it was in June. The thought of another 40 thank you's hanging over my head is reason enough to not have a party!

I did bigger 1st bday parties but that's only because I expanded the invite list to more friends. Christenings I kept to immediate family and close friends ( still about 100 people). In my family, the christening is more important.

I did christening and mine wasn't even that big.
I don't believe in huge parties especially 1st birthday parties. I think they are a waste of money
