Which is more important -- potty training or binky-breaking?

First a bit of background. I had Marron at the ped's last week for a well visit. He told me to come back in 6 months, and that she should be potty trained by then. She'll be 2 in April. I said oh yea, we're going to work on it this summer. He said, "This summer??? No. Do it sooner." I was surprised. I really thought this summer was a good time. He told me that she is very smart, and that very bright kids can either be easy to train, or very difficult. He said that if you catch the time when they are ready, it is very easy but if you miss that time, it becomes very difficult.

She still uses her binky for sleeping/napping, usually in the car and when she is very upset, to soothe herself. I had planned on taking it away when she turned 2.

So my question is which do you think is more important to work on first, and which do you think I can give her more time with -- so that I'm not totally turning her world upside down at the same time. Or do the two have nothing to do with each other, and can I do both at the same time?

my kids werent potty trained untill well over 3.Chat Icon . i dont know how a doctor could tell you she should be potty trained by a certain age. I would think the binky would be more important to break. but even at her young age i dont think its that imperative. jmo.

We opted for potty training. DD will be 2&1/2 and has potty trained in the last 10 days and took to it very well.

The dentist told us to work on getting rid of the pacifier by her 3 year check up in September. We'll aim for that. I think I can reason with her a lot easier closer to 3 than now. I feel like those few months will make a difference. Maybe I'm just fooling myself.

Binky first! I'm potty training my DD this summer, she'll be 2 in May. I know she is not ready just yet. She ***** her thumb, I wish I could take that away!

I did both at right around three. I tried the potty from about 18 months, but she was sporadic. At about 3, she was ready and it was fairly easy.

As far as the binky- she was an addict. She used it for sleeping and in the car. I did the Binky Fairy trick. The fairy would come at night and take all the binkies to give to new babies. In return, she left a Barbie.

Don't rush or stress yourself. It will happen.

If the price of your particular daycare (if you're using it) goes down with potty training - then potty training. If not, then do what you think is best.

Personally, I was potty trained by age two, as were all my siblings, and I plan to try to have DD trained by then as well.

I don't think its reasonable to say a kid should be potty trained by 2. Some kids just arent ready by then. If I were you I would give the potty training a try, and if you feel like she isn't ready, wait on that for a few months, and do away with the binky first.

ITA. Most experts agree that DC's muscle control isn't ready until at least 18months. That's when they are physically able. Most DC aren't trained until 2.5 or 3 (or later). Pushing the issue before they are ready often leads to prolonging the training.

Eliminating the pacis is much easier. Most of the time, it's "out of sight, out of mind". If you remove all pacis, they learn to deal with it.

Remember, not all Drs. are "experts" in everything. That's why it's called "practicing" medicine... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Do what you think is best for your DC.

I say binky. Hayley still has hers for bed and I can't wait to get rid of it. She is not really ready for potty training. She is almost there. She tells me she has to go but I put her on and all she wants to do is wipe and flush and wash her hands.
