Which Job Would you Take?
Ok, hypothetically speaking, if you were offered a position in 2 different schools/districts, how would you pick which one you took?
For example: you are offered a NYC job and a job in Southampton. Both are about 50 miles away. The pay is the same. How would you choose?
PS No, I wasn't offered a job in Southhampton! Just asking.

I would take the job in Southampton. Beach, peaceful and pretty, plus probably less stressful..

Re: Which Job Would you Take?
Long Island job over the city job. In the long run you'l make more $$ teaching on the Island.

Re: Which Job Would you Take?
Well since you used SH "hypothetically", Id choose it bc I love it. If it is the difference of LI vs NYC, Id say LI, but then maybe you need to look at each school and things like class size, future opportunities, travel ease, etc. Edited bc I re-read pay is not an issue.

Re: Which Job Would you Take?
id say it depended on where in the city you got a job- there are some awesome schools in NYC - and you can get student loans paid for if you are in lower income schools for 5 years (most NYC schools qualify, even the good ones)

I just picked it because it is about the same miles as parts of queens/brooklyn would be.

Re: Which Job Would you Take?
Definitely Southampton.
It's a small district so you very well might have more responsibilities but all of that = more experience. Probably also more professional development, opportunities for conferences, etc. Starting salary might be the same but you will quickly make a lot more money as you move up the pay scale in Southampton... it can mean a whole other way of life.
It would be easier to make the move to another LI district that is closer to home. In my experience, I have heard of several LI districts that are leery of hiring city teachers after they have been there for a few years... no offense to any city teachers, this is just what I was told by chairpeople and administrators... they feel like they have gotten too "set in their ways". That was an exact quote from an administrator I met. Again, not my POV.
If the job market doesn't improve (and you never know), you'd rather be a "lifer" at Southampton than in NYC.
ETA: The number of steps and the overall pay schedule is what's important. How many steps are there? And what is your pay in each 5 years, 10 years, 15 years down the line... That's more important than one year's starting salary.
