Which route to take to Newport, RI this weekend?

DH and I are attending a wedding in a beautiful mansion on the coast of Newport, RI this weekend and we don't know the best route to take.

Do we go out east and catch the ferry or do we go over the whitestone and across all of CT? We are coming from SE Nassau. Thanks!

When we went, we went through ALL of CT and although it was a looooooon ride (oh, gee, we're in Connecti...still have to drive through cut Chat Icon ), it was a nice ride together!

I voted Bridge & Ct just because you might hit a lot of traffic on the N. Shore with all the pumpkin pickers and people going out for hayrides and such.

another way to get to RI is to the take the port jeff ferry to bridgeport and then drive from there..it cuts the time./...

The leaves are all changing now, so it may be a really nice ride this time of year...its beatuiful out here in RI!~!

Have Fun!

I went to school in RI and lived in SW Nassau. Without a doubt, bridge and CT. It'll take you about 3 hours, which really isn't that bad. There are 93 exits in CT (just so you have some idea of where you are). I always counted New Haven as my mid-way point. I was going to Providence, which is further north than Newport but right off of 95. You might even be able to make it in under 3 hours if traffic isn't bad.

FYI - if for some reason something happens on the road where 95 is closed down or anything, route 1 runs parallel to 95 the whole way up. It's like a Merrick Road or Sunrise Highway, so not ideal but it's a good alternate in case.

I live out east, so I would normally take the Orient Point Ferry. being that you are pretty close to the city already, I would just drive it. you would have to drive out east anyway, wait around for the ferry, then go on the 1.5 hour ride.

my vote is for the bridge - DH and just did this ride last week to Mohegan Sun. It took us under 2 hours on a Sat afternoon.
There was some traffic on Sunday coming home but once 95 turned into 3 lanes again it was fine.

Have fun!

p.s. - you might want to consider the Throgs Neck, there is always construction or one lane closed on the Whitestone

I think we are going on there too!!

DH has planned a surprise weekend for me to celebrate our anniversary, and we had talked about Newport earlier in the year, so that's where I think we are headed!!

Thanks for all the tips! We've been debating the best way to go.

The wedding will be at the Astors Beechwood Mansion...the bride is gothic and it will be a theme wedding of sorts...she will be wearing a custom made victorian dress and a pair of shoes from the 1800s. Supposedly the mansion has a theatre troop telling ghost stories (Edgar Allen Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, etc.) by candlelight that weekend too!
