Usually they say location, location, location....but it seems that the two are in similar locations, same SD, and I guess at that point I may consider going with the better layout.

I agree with this, but in this case, not everyone has a preference to be so close to the town. For some it's actually a drawback. In this particular case I would go with the better house.

Since you aren't really talking about that much of a distance, I voted for the layout. Especially if you have kids that will only get bigger.
Houses have a way of "shrinking" the longer you are in them as it is.
ITA.... also, it's the same school district and a quiter street. and it's really not that far from the train.

Layout! If #1 has a bad layout plus a sloping backyard it is a no-brainer to pass IMO.

Personally I would choose location over the layout...you can always change a house..but you can't change the location..and I feel like location is most important..you want to be in a good neighborhood

Well that is helpful, because it tells me that I'm not crazy for feeling somewhat indifferent between the two possibilities - both are great. So we'll go for whichever we can get a better deal on.

Where is the laundry in the 2nd house?
What are the sizes of the lots?
In the second house the laundry is right off the kitchen on the first floor.
The first is 1/4 acre, but sloping. Well landscaped though so it has pretty sitting areas.
The second is 1/3 acre, relatively level and rectangular backyard. So, good playspace.
I would defin say the 2nd house!
I know someone who has a large lot but it drops off very steep and sloped and its not usable.
Also i have my laundry on the 2nd floor, but grew up with it on the first floor off the kitchen and its a HUGE benefit.
It is a PIA to shlep up and down 2 flights of stairs. plus you can use the kitchen table to fold your clothes so that helps

normally, i would say choose the one in the better location... BUT it sounds like they're in really similar locations (same SD, etc) so i would go with the colonial layout. it sounds nicer, and i just think colonial layouts seem to work better for families with kids, etc.
in our case, we went with location over ideal layout. our house is in a great neighborhood- lake communty, backs up to woods so we have a gorgeous backyard, nice and quiet... BUT the layout of the house isn't ideally what i would want. its got plenty of room, though and its not totally horrible.. so we compromised for the great location.
in your case, though, like i said.. i would go wtih the better layout since they both seem to have similar locations.
