There literally are thousands of them...

In looking them up, I'm wondering if they are mealy worms Chat Icon

Re: White cocoony looking things on tree leaves....

sounds like aphids?

was it sticky under the tree or on the lower leaves a few weeks ago?

I'm dealing with them now. I bought lady bugs - a natural preditor of aphids, but I'm not sure how it's working.

Spraying would be quicker, but obviously has cons to it. I'm trying not to spray, but I want to save my beautiful dogwood.

yes, probably mealy worms. I had them on a flowering cherry tree last year. I bought a spray to get rid of them - be forwarned, the spray REEKS!! It was disgusting!

They killed our weeping cherry this year and my DH is obsessed with getting rid of them. He sprayed them with an oil that was recommended and the tree is now getting some leaves but they have spread to some bushes on the other side of our driveway. I think he just bought another spray and we're hoping that will work. It's a parasite bug that first looked like a flat woodlouse and now the white stuff is the egg sacks. Chat Icon

If yes, that is "White Cottony Scale". We have it on our weeping cherry for the last two years. We can't seem to get rid of it and it's just killing our tree and I think we might just pull that small tree out. We have a Japense Maple right next to it and we don't want to lose that. We had it sprayed. I guess spraying doesn't really help. Chat Icon

Re: White cocoony looking things on tree leaves....

basically after we sprayed twice I believe, it would get better after the spraying, but then we had to spray again the next year. Chat Icon So it would come back the follow year. I don't know if there is a way to get rid of them completely or not. Our neighbors don't have problems with their weeping cherry, so I don't know why we do and it doesn't eat anything else. So far. Okay, I called my DH and it's called "scale". We used horticultural oil (in a spray) first and that helped a bit and now he has sprayed with horticultural soap and I will let you all know what that result is. DH was in landscaping so he got advice from some contacts.

The lady we are buying our house from told me to dilute palmolive dish soap and warm water and use it in a spray bottle right onto the leave while the morning dew is on them so that it sticks.

Her trees and gardens are beautiful so I would trust her advice!

The full name is Cottony Scale.

I'll have to try the horticultural oil & soap. Or I think I might be pulling out our Weeping Cherry that has this.

GL to the original poster. I hope something works for you. Chat Icon
