Who diagnoses Visual Spatial Issues?
We have a student in our class, who we believe has dyslexia, but since its too early to diagnose dyslexia(student is 5 years old), we want to have her tested for visual spatial issues. She see's letters and number backwards, writes them backwards and inverts them as well. We had an OT come and observe her, and she agreed that something was going on but she couldn't test her...she said the psychologist had to do that. Well, the psychologist came and said she wasn't the one who tested her and was under the assumption that we were looking for a classification change (student is hearing impaired)...we told her no...we don't want it changed...she can be HI and have other issues going on. This little girl is smart, but this problem is holding her back, and we want to address it now before she goes through 1, 2, and 3rd grade having problems reading and writing. Any advice?

Re: Who diagnoses Visual Spatial Issues?
she may need to be referred out to a reading clinic. A good opthamologist cold also rule out any major eye issues. also, if a child is a true dyslexic, i don't think 5 years old is too early to start to diagnose. true dyslexics have left-right issues, read numbers as well as letters backwards and have poor gross motor skills -- all things we can measure in a 5 - year- old.

Re: Who diagnoses Visual Spatial Issues?
The psychologist is the one who would be able to assess visual-spatial issues. The kid probably isn't due for triennial testing and that's why the psych doesn't want/need to test. If you feel that strongly about it, I would talk to the parents and get them to request a psychological re-evaluation. They have the right to request one a year. The kid could certainly have more than one issue, i.e. hearing impaired AND learning disabled.
