Yes, there seems to have been a movement returning toward the SAHM situation during the last few years. But I haven't seen the criticism increasing toward the working mothers... at least in my experience.

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
great question, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Have to do what's best for your situation.
But just my opinion I do think a "mom" who stay home and yet has a nanny and spends days in gyms and spas are not mom's at all! JMO

HELL YA!!!
I SOOOOOOOOO have a lot of critism for them!
I am also TTC and I have to say I haven't decided on what I will be doing once I have a child. It's hard!
I WILL do whatever is good for me. Could care less what people say...

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
This is also a constant source of conversation and speculation for my family and friends as we are TTC.
My parents and sister are shocked that I would even consider being a SAHM, because they feel I would be wasting my education (they haven't said those words out loud, but it's clear).
My in-laws on the other hand have made comments they think it would be selfish for me to go back to work if we can afford for me not to go back.
My work friends all think I will go crazy being at home and my other friends all think I will be too sad NOT to stay home.
Everyone has an opinion!! And meanwhile I have no idea what I'll do, I just want to get pregnant already!!
But I definitely think there is starting to be public backlash at the working moms!!

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
As someone about to be a working mom (but few people know)- you wouldn't believe the comments I hear about working moms- that they need someone else to raise their children, that no way will their kids speak with an accent because the nanny can't speak English- so many comments.

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
I feel like a few years ago, it was probably the SAHM but now it seems that working moms get more.

It's so true--I believe I'll be a working mom, and my DH's grandmother said to me she didn't know why people have children if they don't have the time to raise them themselves.

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
Both ends.
If you are a SAHM then people tell you that you are not doing enough to contribute financially, not furthering the cause of women, not setting a good enough example for your daughter.
If you are a working mother... how can you put your kids in daycare?, kids need their mommies, your child's needs should come before your need to have a career, etc.
There is no way to win. And the worst is how women pass judgement on other women

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
The poll is going exactly as I expected. I think that if you are or plan on being a SAHM, you think they're criticized more often. If you are or plan on being a working mom, same thing.
I think that no matter what you do, you're always going to be judged by others. So, screw 'em and do whatever works best for you.

I think the moms who chose to work, but could financially get by not working get the worst of it.

Re: Who do you think gets the more criticism
Posted by nov04libride my DH's grandmother said to me she didn't know why people have children if they don't have the time to raise them themselves.
Did you explain to her that the population would dwindle & someone needs to pay for your social security! Imagine if familes that had to have 2 incomes didn't have kids.
I hear more cruel comments about SAHMs. Mainly from my most critical friend who happens to be a working mom. I think it depends by the mom. I have a friend who quit her job and than by not having anytime to herself formed a babysitting co-op. Eight mothers got together and would take turns (2 at a time) babysitting on Wednesdays so the other had the whole day to themselves. In the end, they had a huge waiting list to join. She created a non-profit corporation for the moms so purchases were tax deductible, starting fund raising & awarding scholarships to underprivledged - so she's my SAHM hero.
As someone with a daughter, I think it's important for ME (not saying everyone) to work. I want my daughter to see it's important to be financially self sufficient when she gets older.

It was just so funny because she's telling me this (and I fully intend to continue working--I'll finish my doctorate right before we plan to start TTC) and I am just rolling my eyes at DH. She's so old fashioned I didn't even want to argue with her. My mother wants me to be happy, but says with the level job I'll have it will be terribly difficult to manage both, which I realize. I can't be leaving work any time a baby gets a fever, which I see a lot of women I work with do.
