who has "small" children (weightwise)

Samantha is just under 8 weeks old and weighs only 7 lbs 11 oz at 22 inches in height.....our ped is not concerned yet (obviously she wants her to kep growing) but I kinda am....

She is not a "big" eater - but I bf her until she doesn't want anymore and at night she usually drinks around 4 oz....now i know someone will post its genetics but both dh and I are not "small" (Chat Icon ) to say the least - we are also both tall and neither of our families has the best metabolism (if you know what I mean....Chat Icon ) we were floored she was so "tiny" at birth - in fact, she still doesn't weigh what I did (8lbs 1 oz) when I was born!

did anyone else experience this? am i just being a silly new mom?? I can't help but feel like maybe I am "failing" her or something.....Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: who has "small" children (weightwise)

My son Jack is small for his age. He doesn't look underweight, but at age 2 he is 24 pounds. He eats like a pig and is just very active. I used to worry since he weights the same as some babies that arent even 1 yet, but you have to remember that as long as they are growing against their own growth chart, they are probably fine. In other words if she is putting on weight at each visit and is otherwise healthy and happy, I wouldn't worry about it. Jack was born at 6 pounds 15 ounces and was 8 pounds and change at his two month appointment. Molly was just born at 6 pounds 10 ounces and is 8 lbs 4 oz after only two weeks! So everyone is different and I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a lower peanut in weight, she's always been on the lower end of the scale.

Try not to focus on the numbers, what matters is she's thriving, growing and a happy baby no matter what her weight gain is. She's growing at her own paceChat Icon

your NOT a silly mom, you have the same concern im sure every mom, including myself has at one time or another. for instance, my dd is 33 pounds at 4 years old. and my ds is 34 pounds at 2 years old!!! but they are both gaining weight in their own way consistently. thats what the doctors looks for. dont compare her growth to other babies. i learned that, and i have saved myself a ton of worry.Chat Icon

Small baby here too. She never gained weight well and still isn't a great eater. The doctors were never overly concerned because she was healthy and growing and meeting her milestones.
At 13 months she is 17lbs 7 oz (2% i think). She's just petit but healthy.
It's hard not to worry but try not to. Chat Icon

thanks - it always helps to hear about people who have gone through simiale things. Samantha is such a happy baby (which from my point of view - if she was hungry, she couldn't be happy! Chat Icon )and growing and pooping and peeing and all so I guess she'll just be a peanut for now!

I wouldnt worry as long as shes eating. The pediatrician will stay on top of her weight gain at that age anyway and will discuss if its something to be concerned about. She sounds fine to me.

My son is 19 months and has always been in the 25% for weight and 75% for height. I is shaped like a pencil. No fat on him at all and he eats a lot!

Pretty much the same here! Jackson is in the 25% for weight and 85% for height. Built just like Mommy!
