Re: Who is watching the President?
I caught him looking like he was sleeping. Probably wasn't but his head was down for so long and it looked like his eyes were closed. I think the cameraperson thought so too they focused on him for what felt like forever!
ETA: OMG, I am such an idiot. It wasn't Cheney that I thought was sleeping...it was McCain. Well, it was an interesting observation anyway!

Not watching. If I thought he was going to say something new, I might turn it on.

Cheney actually sat there, smirked, leaned forward and then re-settled again.
I think he farted.

I walked out to DH and said the friggin clapping just seems so fake. I guess they had to, because it would have been really quiet had only his supporters clapped!!

well-- that explains the gazed look with the crooked smile.
I also agree-- the clapping and the people intros is such propaganda.

That is annoying. But it's interesting on some of the issues to see some people NOT clap and stay seated!!
I watched the whole thing and I have to say, it's one of the first times he didn't bug the sh!t out of me.
Now if he would only go out an DO the things he TALKS about, I would be happy.
Thought it was nice that he had the Subway Hero guy from Harlem there too.
I got a little choked up!!

The subway guy is awesome! I was so happy to see him there. He is a true a hero!
All of the stories of the people were great, my favorite part of the night.

I agree on all accounts.
and i definitely think that Cheeney farted, too! I said that to DH while he was leaning to the side and smirking
i don't think they were sleeping (McCain, Cheeney, and a bunchof others)... it looked like they all had the papers to follow along with the speech, and they were looking down at it. I could be wrong, but they weren't doing the usual "sleep nod" that goes along with it (though, by now, they may have mastered that technique)

Re: Who is watching the President?
I thought it was fine. I appreciated the fact that he said that there needs to be reforms put in place to stop lawmakers from adding clauses and expenditures to senate and house bills (of course he should also mention that he's used more signing exceptions than any other president in history - more than the last 3 combined)

Re: Who is watching the President?
I think he did well...but he didn't say much about the war; just basically asked for support. The best part of the speech was hearing Madame Speaker for the first time.
Baby Einstein lady, Subway Hero, and War Hero were VERY nice touches...he was trying to pull out all the stops and show the various faces of Great Americans, but diversion? I don't know....

Re: Who is watching the President?
I watched a good portion of it. "Madame Speaker" YAY.
To say I liked it would be going a tad too far, but I think he said a lot of good things and I am glad he toned down his usually bombastic and overly confident tone of voice to give a straightforward address that didn't sound like an arrogant pep rally for himself.
That having been said, I think a lot of the things he said we're vague statements it was impossible to disagree with, so it was a good speech in terms of gaining the support of the american people (After getting at 35% approval rating, over 70% of americans said they were at least somewhat pleased bu what he said), but it didn't do much to inspire confidence in him especially if you don't forget his prior actions. He talks about expanding health care, but recently he made comments about working class people and their "gold plated" health care. Honestly, there are few people with "gold plated" health care. The speech made him seem caring on those issues, but it doesn't make me forget the callousness of the past.
Also, his plea for giving his Iraq plan a chance to work has me divided. On one hand all of the things he said are correct. We can't leave without securing Baghdad. However, there is no conrete plan to show that it wont be sending more troops into the same situation without a new plan or strategy to make it more effective. I still want to hear about an exit strategy. What are we waiting for to exit? What are the short and long term goals? How will the exit be carried out?

Re: Who is watching the President?
What I found irritating is that he was talking about saving SS when but a year ago he was talking about privatizing it.
If he is truly seeing the fault in many of his previous proposals, than that is great. However if this is just, as Jennifer said, a way to use vague references to boost his approval, then I would be even further disappointed in our president.

Re: Who is watching the President?
The clapping is really annoying, as are the standing ovations. You know many people out there are not happy with everything they hear.
I kept thinking it must have been hard for Nancy Pelosi to keep from showing what she thinks. Cheney looked like he was in on a grand joke, Hillary looked disgusted, Kennedy looked constipated.
Mind you, I only watched about 20 minutes, got disgusted, and changed the channel.

Re: Who is watching the President?
I thought the speech was okay. Nothing to rave home about. But he sounded different. Typical domestic policy discussion in the begging (let's see what he'll get done in the next two years). Some of the policies he discussed were a little far fetched. His immigration reform really ticked me off. I was hoping to hear more about border control and Katrinia but didn't, so that was a bit of a disappointment.
Then came the foreign policy. Ohhh... We all knew what he wanted to do. Send in more troops. It was interesting watching Nancy continue to sit, while many people stood. They only time she stood was when he mentioned praising the troops that were already there and then quickly threw in the ones that were going to be deployed...interesting.....nice speech writers
He actually sounded like he was begging and pleading with them. No more hoots and hollers like the last time the war was mentioned. The war is one big mess. Like he said this isn't the war we got ourselves into. But I don't think this is the way to do. He is right on one thing though, Iraq needs to start doing more for themselves and they need to be more involved.

Re: Who is watching the President?
Throwing in supporting the troops was very clever, that way EVERYONE had to stand up and show support even if they disagreed with the statements prior.
Seeing all of the clapping and standing ovations reminds me that politics still is an old boy's club and it just made me feel sad. You could tell when people were really enthusiastic about supporting the president and when they "had to" stand up and show support.
I wish they would hold all appluase until the end so everyone could listen to the speech the president was giving, take it all in and show support at the end.

Re: Who is watching the President?
I have to say I was happy with certain things that the President said.
I just hope that at least some of them will come to fruition.
maybe he can turn around these next 2 years and do something PRODUCTIVE.
I am a registered democrat (done at 18) but I don't vote along party lines. show me something...DO something for the country, and you'll get my confidence and my vote.

.
I noticed that too - she did not applaud or stand for his comments on Iraq. I also got annoyed when he mentioned 9/11 in regards to Iraq. Its like he was trying to pull on the country's heartstrings to gain more support.
