If it were me I would drive back to work and eat in my lot there. I don't think it's fair to stay if it is a busy lot and everyone is waiting for spots.

i agree

Who is wrong here?

I think this is one of those famous WWYD's that no one is going to agree on.

Re: Who is wrong here?

This is really interesting to see how many people have this 'the spot is YOURS' mentality

IMO, the spot is not YOURS, its the store's spot and there is an understanding that you are parking there while you shop at the store.
It's not a free for all first come first served general parking area for anyone who feels like parking for any reason.. its specifically for people to go into the store and then come out and leave, especially if its a crowded lot.

That's just common courtesy to everyone who shops at the store.

If you want to sit in your car and talk on the phone, put your makeup on, eat, chat, whatever... i see nothing wrong with doing that, but not in a spot near the store when you're clearly in a crowded parking lot.
Go drive to another part of the lot that has open spaces or to another area.

^ I think some people are just nicely saying that it would be kind to move (even if it is my spot and its quick).

Generally I agree, but after a few times of angering people, I started to wonder if I felt compelled to move because of how they reacted.

If I saw someone quickly just eat, I don't think it would bother me. However, if I was rushing and it was crowded, maybe I would be annoyed as well.

So I shall move from now on. No harm done. Just was an interesting situation that made me wonder... Am I coming across as entitled? Or are they? There were differing opinions on this silly matter, so maybe there is no clear cut answer.

I swear, it's this parking lot Chat Icon it turns people!

Chat Icon You are not acting entitled IMHO. You made a purchase at a store in the complex and are eating in your car. Eat away!!!!!! It's not like you bought 7 courses for lunchChat Icon I'm not saying I don't get frustrated either but it's more because people see you waiting and they just ignore you. I usually wave them away if i'm not leaving. I just find it rude to assume that someone is leaving and it's now your spot to use. Again I think the only real issue I might have is if it is a handicap spot since there aren't a lot of those.

Re: Who is wrong here?

Just because you are getting into your car doesn't mean you have to drive it immediately unless you are in a loading zone or a spot with a time limit.

The courteous thing to do would be to let anyone who follows and wants to wait know that you aren't leaving right away.

Re: Who is wrong here?

I don’t think it would bother me if someone sat in their car eating (or doing whatever), I would just keep it moving and find a different spot.

If it were me I would probably drive to a less crowded place to eat. I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself with people hovering around trying to take the spot lol

totally my answer. How do you even taste the wrap? lol I would not even enjoy my lunch knowing I had eyes on me wondering wth I was doing...

you have EVERY right to sit there and eat it but if you are feeling like crap doing it, than park else where.

I don't get the whole "you're entitled to the spot because you shopped in the store a half hour ago, so feel free to sit and eat a four course meal" lol or whatever the situation is (not saying that's what you're doing at all OP lol).

The spot isn't yours or mine... it belongs to the store, and is provided to their customers as a courtesy to shop at their store without having to look for street parking. So, basically, once you're done shopping, you're done with the spot so move it along so the next customer can use it. It's just common courtesy. This is especially the case if it happens to be a crowded parking lot... or a very small parking lot with enough spots for just a handful of cars.. some stores even put a time limit on use of their lot for this reason. If it's a large parking lot, and there are plenty of available spaces, that's one thing.. but, if it's crowded enough that people keep driving up to you to see if you're leaving, it's common courtesy to just move it along.

Re: Who is wrong here?

It wouldn't bother me. I'd just think "oh, they're not leaving yet," and find another spot.
However, if I was in your situation I'd park over by TJ Maxx and walk over to TJ to get my lunch and then walk back to avoid the looks and the scrutiny.

Re: Who is wrong here?

Honestly, I get out of a spot as soon as I can bc I know how it feels to "Circle the lot" and see people sitting on the phone, lounging in their car.
Is it wrong of them, No. But when I see that I just think what n asshole and continue my circle.

Who is wrong here?

it's annoying. am i being politically correct by saying that? absolutely not, but it's how i feel.

i find it even more obnoxious when the person sitting in their car doesn't even make a motion to clue in the person waiting for their spot that they're not leaving any time soon. that, i believe, is just common decency.

again, maybe i'm not being PC but oh well.

If someone wants to sit in their car in a spot near the store and do whatever, it is REALLY not impacting me in any life altering way. Worse case scenario, I must drive around waiting for another spot to open or (GASP!) I have to park further away and walk. OH THE HUMANITY! Take a nap if you want, I'll get over it and I will be just fine.

I would NOT tell anyone I am not leaving either-I don;t owe it to anyone. The same thing if I am at a shopping plaza and putting my package in my car and closing it and going into another store. I am entitled to do so!

You might not "owe" anyone an explanation, but its just common courtesy - something that there's just not enough of these days (as has been the subject of other posts on here). It doesn't cost you anything other than a split second, to waive the waiting person on. I have to say, its that kind of attitude that just makes day to day life a little more stressful, for no reason.

To the OP, I don't think its a big deal to stay in the spot and eat, but again, just as a common courtesy, if you know the lot is really busy AND there is somewhere else you can get to easily, then I night do that.

Exactly!

I say who cares. I work in a busy mall and have gone to my car to take a break sometimes and if I see someone waiting for me to leave I just let them know I'm not leaving. Can't say I've ever seen someone get annoyed with me but if they did that's their own problem...

Re: Who is wrong here?

I don't think anyone is wrong...it's just people going about their business, and it's not worth getting overly concerned about as the person having lunch in the car OR as a driver looking for a spot.

Very true. Those people are atomic assholes. To people trying to get their kids in the car and to older or disabled people. I've seen that. They actually HONK! NUTS
