Whole-house vacuums?

With all of these discussions about vacuums, I was wondering if anyone had a whole-house or central vacuum? I visited a house once that had them. The vacuum motor is usually in the garage or basement, and there are permanent tubes throughout the house that you can plug attachments into, or just sweep directly into the system.

We do! I love it. And yes, the main canister is in the garage. There are also attachments for that so you can vacuum your car!
In the kitchen, there's a kick switch under the sink with a rectangular opening, so you can sweep stuff right into the hole. So cool!

My IL's have a central vac. The main unit is in the basement boiler room.

When DH and I were staying in their basement apt. (while our house was undergoing renovation) my MIL turned it on one morning and it scared the @#$% out of me I forgot she had one. It is loud.

I have a central vac and I love it. Interestingly enough it was not an upgrade that I would have necessarily paid for if I built my house. However, I now would not live without it and in fact repalced my unit about two years ago.

I will say that I think central vacs work best in homes with mainly wood floors and they are not as great on dense carpet.
