Thanks for posting this.
I dont know if people are aware but newborns and infants are very susecptible to this illness as they do not have antibodies from us (b/c most of us have not had pertussis boosters and our immunities have worn off).
I just wanted to add this info b/c alot of people take their newborns out in public so early and this is a real risk. Not looking for drama, just sharing info.

Most kids are already immunized... but I'd freak out if I got that email.... DS is a baby and obviously isn't done with his immunization series yet.... and whooping cough is very dangerous for a baby to catch

Don't they have decent immunity after 2 or 3 shots in the series?

I appreciate you adding that in. I'm a strong advocate of not taking babies out early My dd was hospitalized with a MINOR infection at 2 weeks that she could from her brother. Definitely not worth it if you can avoid it!

The largest population who have whooping cough are teens and elderly b/c they do not get boosters and we need boosters throughout our lives to remain immune.
I never knew this until I did vaccine research for DD.
So believe it or not, pertussis will NEVER become a disease of the past b/c you can't force adults, teens and eldery to get vaccinated. So really, it isn't the people not getting their kids vaccinated so much as the rest of us out here without immunities. Pretty much ANY of us are the ones who can spread it, not so much from parents not vaccinating.

DS only had 2 so far... I am guessing that baby immune systems require a lot more priming.... He would definitely be better off than a baby w/o immunizations, but he wouldn't be as protected as you or me....

But WE aren't really protected b/c unless you had boosters as an adult (most of us haven't), odds are our immunities wore off. I didn't know this until I read about DTAP and my ped confirmed this.
Before I have another child, I plan to get the TDap (adult Dtap) so my next baby will be protected from birth.
My DD only had 2 so far also, but I know having 2 is much better than none. So it comforts me a tiny bit but we are still staying out of crowded places until she gets #3. I am an overly cautious person.

I have NO idea when mine was but I plan to get it done before I have another child.
My ped told us we, as the parents, hold the greatest risk to bringing it home to our DD. And that's why I will get the Tdap before I ttc #2.

I am 98% current on my immunizations.. I got boosters for everything under the sun (even Hep A!) in 2003. this thread made me realize that I *think* I didn't get DTaP then, becuase I had it in 1998 I'm not sure, though. I really have to look up my records again. This thread is great though, becuase otherwise, I wouldn't have thought of it! (Might as well get my tetanus booste while I'm at it!)

I meant diseases in general not just pertussis.

I know, I could use a tetanus booster too . Had I know before ttc I would have gotten it. Now I know that it's good to be up to date on that for future pgs/babies as well, so they can receive antibodies from us. Who knew? Not me but I do now.

Re: Whooping Cough in Northport Middle School
Our doctor warned us that the elderly are the worst at giving our children this disease since they may cough on a regular basis and not realize they are even sick.
This happened to us when my DD was two weeks old and got RSV from my MIL who thought her cough was just due to her CPOD, not a viral illness
So even if you stay in with your infant, be sure that EVERYONE who has even the slightest cough avoid your child.
