Why?
I know part of teaching is pouring your heart into everything, but it hurts so much sometimes. How is it ever fair for a 21 year old who's about to graduate from college to lose his mom right before Christmas? I don't want to go to this wake, but I know I have to... 
It's amazing how only having him in tenth grade six years ago still means I care so much...

it WILL mean a lot to have you there! i lost my stepdad on christmas eve a few years ago and my favorite hs teacher came. on such a hard, sad day, seeing someone like that may just give him that much more strength and a little bit of happiness knowing that you still think and care about him.
i know it's hard but you're doing the right thing by going

aw im sorry - but im sure the student will be glad to see you there - i lost my dad in february of my senior year and I remember all the teachers that came

Thanks, everybody. 
I'm going tomorrow afternoon. I was reminded today of how amazing some of the people I work with are. A teacher who is out on maternity leave found out what happened and apparently arranged to be able to go tomorrow night. It made me so happy to know that this family is going to have the support they need. Just... really not looking forward to tomorrow and getting one of these  hugs....
