you may have used too much baking soda/power.
and the temp in the oven was either too high or you left them in too long.
don't be upset. baking is chemistry. even Marie Curie burnt a few batches in her day

Totally not a baker - just things I heard from tv...
1 - are you using a good pan? 2- bakers: do you think it would help to put a small tray of water on the shelf below the cookies to help even out the temp?
Did you rotate them? does your oven usually run hot?

I swear by this: Butter-flavor Crisco. It remains stable at a higher temp than butter or margarine. Also, if you use butter, use unsalted.

Re: Why are my cookies puffy and getting burned at the bottom?
Thanks everyone. I have really good pans, but I'm a little rusty with the cookies. Haven't made a batch in ages. I think I messed up the baking soda/salt and I used salted butter. I was going to halve the recipe, but wasn't paying complete attention and then put in the full amount of bs/salt. Then I eyeballed the rest of the flour the whole time saying to myself--you can't eyeball with baking.
Anyway, somehow the rest of the cookies came out edible--though not too pretty.

Parchment paper helps mine not to burn on the bottom. I won't make cookies without this!
