Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
I think because they are afraid to admit they may need help for one thing or another. I am for it, if it helps why not.

Finding out the truth about a situation or oneself can be scary.
It's hard to face problems when you have been avoiding them.

I also think that many people think there's a stigma attached to it. If people find out you are going they'll think you're crazy.

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
Probably because of the stigma against it
Also, I think a lot of people who are feeling really overwhemled with problems feel like counseling won't change anything...it won't pay my bills, it won't cure my disease, it won't fix the roof, it won't get me out of a bad relationship, etc etc.
Also, tied into that I think people tend to look outside at problems that maybe do have an inner component. They don't want to think they have a problem

I totally agree with this...I just started seeing a therapist after avoiding my issues for many years.

this is probably the most truthful reason.

Some people are skeptical of counselors.

I think A: people are scared B: there is a false perception it's for the weak, which is lame.
My sis is a licensed LMFT, marriage family therapist and I think what she does is wonderful. If we or I needed it/had issues, I'd go 100%. It feels good to get it out!

It is the final hope lost that you cant fix things yourself and you need a stranger to help. I can understand.

i'm not telling you you're wrong, b/c feelings aren't wrong, but it's sad that ppl feel like this. Try and think of it as an uninvolved party who is neutral and can help you shed light and sort things out. It's also someone who actually wants to hear you talk! ha ha!

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
The attitude is changing, though. I've recommended counselling to some clients who I thought would be reluctant, and they surprise me and go.

No no dont get me wrong. I would get to a point where if I needed it, I would admit it BUT at first, if the suggestion was made and I wasnt ready for it, that would be my reason.

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
I think it depends on what kind of counseling too. While some may believe in seeing one for drug and alcohol abuse they may not buy not relationship counseling, as an example.

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
I think in general it's hard for a lot of people to ask for any kind of help whether it be therapy or can you help me move?
I also think there is a fear of having to face emotions, feelings & situations people may have been avoiding. Plus it must be difficult to find someone you can really talk to.

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
I think talking to someone I don't know about my problems doesnt help me. I went for a while and when I was talking about a particular problem, the doctor had to look in his notes about it. I felt I could get more by talking to friends or something.

You should have found a different therapist! That is TERRIBLE!
I agree with all the other posters as to why people dont seek therapy though. I know so many people who could benefit from therapy. I almost think it should be a requirement.

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
I agree with the reasons posted, but I also think that for some people, they think that going to therapy implies that they are "crazy" or have a mental illness, which is such a false perception!

Re: Why are people in general so opposed to seek counseling?
I think the realization of "I can't do this alone", and having to "ask for help" can be defeating and embarassing for some.
Other times it's simply the lack of awareness that someone has a problem that creates opposition.
