Why are so many people moving to NJ?

I couple of people and friends that I know are all moving to NJ. I know that the taxes are cheaper than NY, but the commute to NYC will be a killer especially when tolls and gas are going up higher. I thought about moving to either westchester or NJ because I grew up on LI and I want a new start in a different location. Any suggestions or ideas from people who now live in NJ or Westerchester.Chat Icon

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

My whole family lives in Georgia and they want me to move down there. The only problem is my job is here and I am already establised in my career and I am pursuing other career options with help from my AP at my school. Also, I know that the living conditions are cheaper but the pay ***** down there if you are in the education field. I don't know. Who knew that this was going to be a challenge or difficult decision to make. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

I have a couple of friends who live up there. However, I have to do research on these areas before I think about moving there. I don't want to move too far from the city. I have a friend that just moved to bloomfield and union township area. They told me that their taxes are around 5k-6k which isn't too bad. but they did mention to me that the taxes are going up in those areas too.

i grew up in south jersey ( burlington county, like 20 minutes outside philly), and now i live in north jersey- morris county area. to me, i'm not sure if they are moving to NJ to save money- to me, NJ is just as expensive as LI/NY. but i know house prices here are going down and people are starting to be able to get more for their money. we pay about 8 K a year in taxes, so i'm not sure how that compares to LI.
i also LOVE the pace of life in morris county where i am. we are about 10 minutes from a nice mall/big shopping area, but we live in a quiet lake community- we get to take our dog for a walk around a beautiful lake every day. theres also a small beach/community club, too for in the summer kids can go swimming in the lake. there are also a lot of great county parks with nice hiking trails, picnic areas etc.. but also lots of nice, small "downtown" areas with restaurants and small shops, etc... its just a nice, slightly slower pace of life than it seems LI or NYC would be. maybe thats why??

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

i'm closer to the city now in north jersey than i was living on long island.

i didn't move here by "choice" - but by "marriage" but my taxes are way lower than my parents on long island and i bought more for my money. not as big of a difference as other states, but small.

there are buses and trains in NJ just as in nyc. the tolls are going up sure, but my monthly rail ticket was less in nj than on li.

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

Both DH and I grew up in Long Island. I never thought we would end up in NJ, but we moved to NJ because the company I work for relocated to Parsippany, NJ from Manhattan.

We live in Essex County and absolutely love it. My commute to the office is 30 mins on a bad day and DH takes NJ Transit and is in NYC in 40min...so the commute is actually better for him from NJ than from LI. However it is no cheaper (homes, taxes, etc) in my area than in LI, but if you go out a little further North or West you can get a bigger bang for your buck on a home.

Personally, I find it very laid back here. Everything is very convenient. We love the small town feel of our neighborhood. Overall DH and I really can't ask for anything more.

Same here... my office at my previous job, moved from Melville to Newark, so I moved to NJ. I actually find that taxes are equal to or more than what's on LI. But again, it depends on where you are. If you go down to South Jersey, or the western part of the state, taxes seem to be lower. I also live in Essex Cty. I have a 20 minute commute to work, we can also be in Manhatten in just under 30 minutes by car (depending on traffic), or the train is 30 minutes from where I live to Penn Station.

I grew up on LI, but I have to say, I don't think I could ever live back on LI again. I love where we live.

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

I grew up in Central NJ and LOVED IT!!! Liked it so much better than LI...Less congestion, friendlier people, and the commute to NYC is the same as where I am now in Suffolk (45 mins by train). That said, it is just as expensive as LI, price-wise and tax-wise. You'll find some cheaper areas, as you would on LI, but in general the more desirable areas are not going to save you any money.

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

We are from suffolk orginally and we are moving to Westchester

We live in Queens now and while I like it alot- it's actually really expensive in Bayside and Whitestone- which are the only areas I would consider

so for about the same $$$ - I can get a bigger house in Westchester with land and have a decent commute to NYC and DH can commute to Garden City (his hours are 12-9pm- so he never hits traffic)

NJ would be out of the question for us b/c of where he works- but I like NJ also- they pump the gas for you and 50 cents a gallon cheaper and the sales tax is less or there isn't any on clothes- sounds good to me!

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

I moved to NJ because DH had a townhouse and it just seemed natural for me to move in there with him. I do miss LI - but mostly my family because they live there. But my commute is shorter from where I live in NJ now than it was in Long Island, plus it's cheaper. I lived in Nassau county where there weren't many cute little towns to walk around in- and NJ has alot of them. I don't find that people are any nicer here though - but it could be the area I live in. Plus our taxes are probably equal to LI taxes.

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

We moved to NJ after we got married. The houses on Staten Island were so expensive. We would never have been able to find a house like this for the money we paid. Also, we both work in NJ so financially, it was the best move for us.

Re: Why are so many people moving to NJ?

Do you plan to stay within commuting distance to NYC?

I have friends who live in Westchester and they still pay $12,000 a year on a 1,000 SF home.

If you are willing to move outside the NYC commuting area you could go further Upstate, I live near Albany/Saratoga and pay $1,200/yr in property taxes for a 1,800 SF home, and can still be in NYC in 2.5 hours - not good for a daily commute, but it's easy for a day trip on the weekend.

DH and I moved from LI to PA b/c the taxes are way way cheaper and you get a much bigger house with much more land for the money.
