They're not really making them anymore.

What brand are you looking for? Walmart has a few of them under $100...

We have separate components. That way, I get the best DVD player/recorder that I want, and the VCR that I want (cheapest, best, whatever). It's usually pretty easy to connect them to transfer from one medium to the other.

Usually, when you get one device that does 2 or more things, it doesn't do either one very well.

it's a gift for my sis. I personally wouldn't get it, but that's what she wants.

I disagree. I think it depends on the device. We have a Sony that I bought 2 years ago for around $200 that works amazingly well. The VCR records our favorite shows with automatic picture adjustment and a ton of features like TV Guide+, commercial skip, timers. And the DVD part is great too.

You can't expect greatness from the cheaper models though, especially because of all the moving parts, so that I agree with. But to use it once in a while it's not bad.
