Why can some general dentists do root canals but then some refer you to an Endodontist?
Does it depend on the location of the tooth?

Many factors. For me, if it seems complicated or a pain in the ***, I refer to the endodontist. I do not enjoy doing RCTs.

I like the honesty.
My regular dentist did my root canal - but then I ended up at the oral surgeon anyway since I needed an apico.

Same for my hubby (a dentist) .. I need a root canal on a molar (going tomorrow) and he doesn't want to do it, too much of a PITA and he would rather an expert (someone that does these things all day every day) do it so it comes out absolutely as perfect as can be It will cost $1300 as opposed to FREE-o! We are assuming the guy will give us a break due to all the referalls he gets from DH...so maybe it will be kinda free If so we will buy him a nice gift! Geez, sorry for the ramble! Kahuna, going to Hill & Russo, know them?

Should I be concerned a general dentist is doing it? Maybe I don't really need one?

many general dentists do root canals but like the other poster said some are a PITA. Some wont even touch a tooth if it has calcified canals. Endos have many different instruments and are more qualified
