why can't they change it to ten months

why don't they just change it to ten months instead of nine months and this way we can officially say we are pregnant for 10 months. For some reason parents have a hard time understanding that you are already pregnant (according to dr.s) even b4 you ovulate.

I was honestly SHOCKED when I found out that you are actually pregnant for 40 weeks! I felt like I have been lied to all my life with this 9 month stuff!!!!

This makes no sense to me. Pregnancy is considered the meeting of an egg and a sperm and the resulting creation of an embryo. How could you possibly be pregnant before you ovulate and fertilization hasn't occured? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I understand that the "40" weeks includes the release of the egg prior to ovulation but that doesn't mean you are pregnant. You aren't pregnant until the egg is fertilized.

I agree, but that is how the drs. count it. when I tried telling my mother and father when i first found out that I was 4 months almost 5 months pregnant, they couldn't believe it. It is really silly, but I guess it's just a way to be consistent and calculate due dates.

It is strange, but if you think about it, it does make sense. You're pregnant for 9 FULL months, and techically the first day you're starting your 10th month is when you should be due. So it's not when you start your're 9th month when you're due, it's when you've finished the full 9th month and are starting your 10th.

I totally 100% agree. Its even harder explaining it to my friends who haven't been pregnant yet. Trying to make them realize its really 10 instead of 9 makes them confused.

Right...so you're really not pregnant for 10 months, just 9 full months. Unless you go late, of course.

Otherwise there would be 13 months in a year being that there are still 12wks (3 months) remaining.

Re: why can't they change it to ten months

a month does not equal 4 weeks, it's more like 4 1/2 weeks, so that's why it's 40 weeks and 9 months.

i wouldn't want to change it... being pregnant for 10 months would be more like 42 or 43 weeks!!

*Technically* a month is on average, 4.3 weeks long, NOT 4 weeks. 40 weeks= 9 months

Re: why can't they change it to ten months

I'm 35 weeks this week and DH only realized this past week that the length of the pregnancy (40 weeks) was actually 10 months!

He wanted to know what was up with that and I said I have no idea why they tell you 9 months...

Actually I think they do it to trick you into getting pregnant. Maybe if they told you right off the bat 10 months, some women wouldn't do it! Chat Icon

Re: why can't they change it to ten months

My mom and my aunt were discussing this after I had DD. I was 32weeks, 5 days so I was 8 months PG. But I wasn't due for another 7 weeks, so that would make 10 months.

I told my mom that the drs. count from your last period b/c they can't tell when you conceived. She understood that, my dad wanted no part of the conversation. Chat Icon
